Movie Digest

“Voice of Silence” is a 2020 Korean Movie, the story of which involves Tae-In (Yoo-Ah In), an allegedly mute young man, and Chang-Bok (Yoo Jae-Myung), a middle-aged religious man. To sustain themselves, the duo starts cleaning and disposing of the dead bodies of the victims murdered by the Mafia and are thankful for it. But one day, their supervisor makes an odd proposition, to look after an eleven-year-old girl for two days. Cho-Hee (Moon Seung-Ah), an extremely calm girl, becomes a problem for the two men when the said supervisor is killed by his superior. Now, they become the kidnappers in society’s eyes, landing in trouble as Chang-Bok eventually becomes unreachable. Is Cho-Hee able to reunite with her family? How the “kidnapper” duo deals with the situation should be left open for the audience to find out.

The Feel-Good Part

Director Eui Jeong Hong doesn’t fail to impress the viewers with this work of hers. The innocence of Cho-Hee and her bonding with Tae-In after the two are all by themselves is adorable, and the way Cho-Hee bonds with Tae-in’s little sister is unforgettable. The sprinkle of humor while the two “cleaners” deal with the dead bodies and them dealing with the little girl initially has its significance here.

The Disappointing Factor

Although the plot appears exciting and unique, without any romantic sides, the ending was abrupt, i.e., more of a cliff-hanger. And at one stage, the story’s progression becomes relatively slow and monotonous. The calmness of Cho-Hee is quite unrealistic since she was legit kidnapped but remains somewhat unaffected.

In-Depth Analysis

This movie gives its audience a look into the lives of people struggling to make a living, burdened with familial responsibilities. Like in this case, Tae-In and Chang-Bok take up the odd and obnoxious job of cleaning up after mafias to have food on the table. It also showed the soft sides of Tae-In, Cho-Hee and their bonding after Chang-Bok supposedly runs away is something that touches every heart. Their bonding after spending time together is beautiful.

Star Power

Action speaks louder than words. The saying appears to be accurate because of the mute character of Yoo Ah-In. Little Moon Seung-Ah wins hearts with her childish innocence. Yoo Jae-Myung uniquely delivers his part, like always.

Overall Opinion

If one likes Crime genres along with some adorability and subtle light-heartedness, then this movie is a must-watch for them.
