Fox Spirit Bai is on a quest for immortality in the human world. His goal is to attain the soul bead, which will grant him immortality. The way to attain the soal bead is by killing a human. In the human world, he meets a scholar Wang, who becomes his target. But for some reason, he forms a strong bond with Wang. They become friends and fight mythical creatures together. But Bai has a very tough choice to make- save Wang, or complete his quest?

The Feel-Good Part

The scenic visuals in the movie are a treat to the eyes. The art directors have outdone themselves. Ordinary scenes are also rich in details. The movie has the right blend of funny and heart-warming. The ending is touching and emotional. At one moment, you might feel the depth of a scene in your heart, the next you might be laughing out loud.

The Disappointing Factor

It feels that the main characters aren’t going on a journey. It almost feels like they are just moving from one scenic set to the next. While Bai is impish yet sensitive, Wang’s character comes across as whiny and weak.

In-Depth Analysis

The story is based on old Japanese folk tales about fox spirits. The spirits have their personalities. There are myths about them that the general audience might not know. There is a target audience for this movie, and the director had to work hard to cater to them. They could not divert much from the original myths, yet had to be unique. The movie had some excellent CGI effects, which were essential to the plot of the story. You might end up learning more about Japanese myths and folk tales.
