Song Qingming and Mu Xinyun start investigating her brother’s mysterious death. But it is a difficult puzzle, followed by more deaths and riddles.

The Feel-Good Part

There is no such feel-good part in the movie. It is a pure horror movie, which gets more intense with every passing second, as the mysteries unravel and the unnecessary rituals take place.

The Disappointing Factor

There are a lot of casts in the movie with flat acting, nothing very memorable. The plot is good enough, but the overall structure of the movie is poor.

In-Depth Analysis

The movie takes place in the early republican period, somewhere in southern China. Mu Xinyun comes to pay a visit to her family, after studying medicine abroad, with her boyfriend, Song Qingming, a member of the revolutionary party. She notices that the behavior of her family members is odd despite her older brother, Mu Zhuoyuan’s wedding. She then discovers that her brother died two days ago in the marriage chamber which is said to be haunted and was buried yesterday, and a servant girl Xiaodie was also buried alive with him, according to the family practice.

Mu Xinyun wants to have a post-mortem of Mu Zhuoyuan’s body but the family disagrees. Song Qingming and Mu Xinyun feel there is something fishy about this death and starts investigating the case.

Star Power

This was the debut of the Taiwan actress Huang Xindi on the big screen but failed to deliver a good performance. The whole movie was carried on by Ge Tian, who did an excellent job and made the movie somewhat bearable.

Overall Opinion

The plot could have been more creative. The structure of the movie is passable. It has a little mix of politics in it too.
