Detective Dee And City Of Mists is a Chinese movie. It is another addition to the mysteries of Detective Dee from the DTV series. The plot of the movie is pretty interesting. Wuzhou kingdom is plagued by locusts. It was a rare occurrence in that century. Empress Wu Ze Tian tries to help the locals with relief money. But everything fails when the money is robbed. Detective Dee is asked for his expertise and he is ready to help.
The Feel-Good Part
There are a few feel-good parts in the movie as Zhao Yuan Zhen the personal assistant of detective Dee tries to find clues and solve the mystery. The main focus being a female lead in the Detective Dee mysteries is fresh and unique. It helps to bring a new and refreshing perspective to the series while keeping the original spirit of the show.
The Disappointing Factors
The biggest disappointing factor of the show was probably the lazy writing of the movie. The mystery and danger of the movie are not as engaging or threatening on any level. The fighting scenes looked rehearsed and awkward. The movie has a low budget which comes in the way of its production quality. All of it combined leaves the viewers unsatisfied and bored.

The money is supposed to be delivered to all the disaster-affected areas but it’s robbed on the way there. Tens and thousands of Taels(1 tael = 1.3 ounces) of silver are robbed and disappear into butterflies. Detective Dee is asked for his expertise and he is ready to help. Detective Dee gets on the case but decided to use a different tactic for this one. He assigns his assistant Zhao Yuan Zhen to investigate the case. He instead goes undercover among the civilians to investigate secretly. While investigating the case, they find Guan Xiao Qi. They think she’s guilty of the robbery and ask her to prove her innocence. But they are caught in a difficult situation when the relief money is stolen again. The plot of the movie is interesting but poorly executed. The writing fails to create an atmosphere of urgency with the characters. The supernatural part of the movie is merely just flying powers which doesn’t even give them much upper hand.
Star Power
The star power of the show is the male and female lead actors. Other than their acting most of the show felt average. The actors did their best in a low-production movie with lazy writing.
Overall Opinion
Overall, the show has a very interesting premise with a good cast. But the writers and production team failed in the execution of the plot. It wasn’t engaging or intriguing enough to keep the viewers in their seats which is an important aspect of creating a mystery. Overall, it’s an average addition to the Detective Dee universe of mysteries.
