Drama Digest

James and Sky are roommates and university students who have planned a weekend vacation at James’ old family home. They plan on an elaborate romantic getaway until a visitor disrupts their plans. The visitor happens to be James’ mother who though he brought a girl home but instead found that he brought his best friend to the house. As the three of them spend some time together, James’ mother starts suspecting the nature of their relationship is not what she thinks it is.

The Feel-Good Part

The production value of the Series sequel is the strength of the show. The aesthetics and cinematography that is inculcated in this sequel is a good addition that enriches the narrative while immersing the audience into the viewing experience. The show explores James’ relationship with his mother and how it evolves, which is a perspective that hasn’t been explored in the show. The romance is present in small doses but the central story explores the mother-son relationship. The show ends on a satiating note, it resolves all the conflict in the span of one hour and manages to satisfy viewers. The series is short, which doesn’t require too much of an investment by the audience.

The Disappointing Factor

The characters lack depth. James’ mother is hard to connect with as a character as there is no information given about her as a person. This makes it hard to see their relationship grow as the progression feels somewhat shallow since she was never introduced on the show before. The romance takes a backseat to prioritize the mother-son relationship, which may be a let-down since the couple is not given a lot of romantic screen time. The show often comes across as melodramatic as there is no attempt to balance the heavy story with light hearted humour or easy-going scenes. The tone of show feels quite serious, which is different from its predecessor Roommate. This sequel feels more like a coming of age story rather than a romantic drama. Sky has been given very little screen time and his role is limited to sparse romantic moments. His perspective is not a part of the story hence his growth feels minimal; he often feels more like a prop to further the story than a real character. There is a lack of emotional impact throughout the show despite keeping a relatively serious tone. This may have been because of heavy melodramatic elements and rushed execution of a full-fledged story.

In-Depth Analysis

The drama would have benefited from being a little longer than it is as it could have taken the time to develop new characters and add depth to new and existing dynamics within the show. The show is quite enjoyable despite its flaws for existing fans of the show as it may show the audience new things about their beloved characters from Roommates.

Star Power

The performances were inadequate; some actors were leaning too much into melodramatic acting, which often felt unnatural and unnecessary.

Overall Opinion

This show is an easy skip. There isn’t much to it besides the coming of age story and a wholesome ending. It may be interesting for existing fans as it is somewhat adequate in its delivery of the story and is a short binge.
