Hee Tae, the pride of Gwangju when he enters Seoul National University College of Medicine with good marks. Kyung Soo, Hee Tae’s best friend, and an avid pro-democracy activist insists on opening an illegal clinic for students on the run from the government.  During a protest, a factory worker is injured. Hee Tae went for a meeting with his marriage partner arranged by his father, in exchange for the costs of discreetly transporting himself and the factory worker to his hometown. He meets Myung Hee, a nurse is persevering through hardships. She agrees to go for the meeting in place of her friend Soo Ryeon as she will get the airfare to go to Germany. Myung Hee and Hee Tae fall in love with each other. In May 1980, amidst the passion and cries for democracy. Hee Tae and Myung Hee find themselves in fate.

The Feel-Good Part

The story is wonderful, and the length was perfect for the show to finish. The story approaches the sides of the uprising. The story was well-written, and the drama extensively showed various perspectives.

The Disappointing Factor

The fact that youth for everyone is not always joyful is not a disappointing but sad truth. The second main lead could have a more conclusive ending.

In-Depth Analysis

This drama is based on actual events of the Gwangju uprising that occurred in Gwangju city, South Korea, from 18 to 27 May 1980. The drama started as a typical rich man poor woman drama where the female lead is obvious to overcome all the barriers of her life. As the story progresses, they get together promptly, and they overcome many hurdles. The ending was sad. The historical setting made the love story unique. The story reflects the youth struggling and fighting, which is relatable. The relationship in this drama was lovely. The relationship of Myung Hee with Myung Soo. It was wonderful watching them together. Youth of May is a beautiful story with an unfortunate ending.

Star Power

The actors portrayed the emotions in depth. The actors were genuine as if they were those characters. Lee Do Hyun as Hee Tae was brilliant. He described the feelings indeed.

Overall Opinion

Youth of May is 80s nostalgia and retro romance with reality. It gives honor to the victims and survivors. It is a historical melodrama done properly.
