Drama digest

Kingdom: Ashin of the North starts before the beginning of the happenings in the Kingdom series. The young Ashin stays in a border village with her father and ill mother. Ashin and her contemporaries in the village were alienated as second-class citizens because they stayed on Joseon land for a long time. The ground is also the ideal place for a violent conflict. Ashin is on her way to find a mysterious blue “resurrection” flower that will save her ailing mother. Unfortunately, she loses her family.  Watch the episode to know how Ashin avenges her wrong-doers.

The feel-good part

The best part of this zombie thriller is that it has a smooth flow with the Kingdom series. Most of the scenes are engrossing. The series immediately takes us to the main plot, which is so convincing. Besides, we get a mind-blowing view of the scenery, including the sun, snow, jungles, etc., in this episode. There are several geographical locations that we didn’t see in the Kingdom series earlier. The cinematography is excellent, and we can see the actions of the stars in their truest sense through the dark frames.

The disappointing factor

Though this vengeful origin tale of the prequel could have concentrated on the pacing to some extent, and though it has some minor logic issues, it doesn’t seem to be a major flaw.

In-depth analysis

When the Kingdom series, which was demonstrated to be the best zombie TV series, ended, the audience wanted more of it. Kingdom: Ashin of North is an amazing spin-off of the much-appreciated Kingdom series. This riveting episode speaks in-depth about the life of Ashin and the origins of the undead. With a long 93-min runtime fitting for a feature film, this episode also reminds one of the Game Of Throne in its unwavering quotient.

The storyline does not yield to weak holes. This special episode, though, is a spin-off of the Kingdom, can be considered a stand-alone. Besides, seldom do we see such roles given to women in TV series. In fact, Ashin, though she is the protagonist, also makes for the perfect antagonist over time. One can expect a blockbuster season 3 after this episode.

Star power

Kim Shi-a does an exemplary job as the young Ashin, who sees her family slaughtered before her eyes. The trauma that she faces is well expressed through the multitude of expressions she shows. Her transition from a naïve child to a fierce person is awesome. And this is narrated empathetically. Kim Shi-‘s aggressive actions match the inhuman treatment given to the tribe.

Overall opinion

The Kingdom fans will enjoy this special episode. That said, even if you have not watched Kingdom earlier, you will like it. Whether you call it a revenge story or a zombie episode, or a war tale, this episode will definitely keep you hooked to the seat.
