Drama Digest

Making great food for her family is a mother’s joy! Takeshi, her rebellious son, meanwhile, considers her irritating and boisterous. Takeshi’s hyperactive mother keeps a record of their love and feasts.

The Feel-Good Part

While the story progresses, it never tends to forget to balance it with physical humor and snappy quips as it explores deeper themes about parenthood and growing up. Though amusing, it also teaches us to love and respect our mothers, as well as our fathers – everyone involved in our household – because becoming a teenage ager changes a lot, not only in looks but also in our personalities and how we treat others.

The Disappointing Factor

The Takeshi-guy lacked acting ability. You’ll notice that his facial expression isn’t in sync with his emotions. Expectations are set by the storyline and the act itself, but as the episodes progress, you’ll notice some alterations or improvements.

In-Depth Analysis

Rieko Saibara wrote and illustrated Samurai Kaasan, a Japanese humour manga series based on her experience as a housewife and mother. From October 2002 to June 2017, it was serialised weekly in the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper’s morning edition. The titular kaasan and her husband were played by Kyko Koizumi and Masatoshi Nagase, a real-life divorced couple. At the 14th Shanghai International Film Festival in 2011, it won the Best Film for Asian New Talent Award. In 2012, Koizumi was named Best Actress at the 66th Mainichi Film Awards, and Nagase was named Best Actor at the 20th Japanese Movie Critics Awards.

Star Power

Joshima is so convincing in the role that you forget about the drag. He isn’t playing a drag version of a mother; he is just portraying an off-kilter mother, and he does so admirably. Onishi may lack acting experience, but when he’s carried by Joshima, it all balances out. The remainder of the actors does an excellent job in their roles. Mother’s body language, reactions, and actions are all exaggerated to a degree, but not to the point of being irritating. Instead, they’re exaggerated but amusing. So it’s a lot of fun to watch her. It’s also a great stress reliever.

Overall Opinion

The drama is grossly underappreciated. It begins as a sitcom, but towards the conclusion, it has evolved into something unique. It’s a lot of fun and lighthearted. The crew behind the scenes are masters at creating amusing moments for the public.
