Drama Digest

“Riso no Otoko” is a Japanese drama dealing with inhibitions in love. Komatsu Toko (Renbutsu Misako), a 30 year old single woman, working as a hair stylist, dreaming about an ideal man for her. What will happen to these best friends’ love life? Watch the drama to find out more.

The Feel-Good Part

The drama comprising of 8 episodes, each of 30 minutes duration, which is actually a good part, because the director didn’t stretched the story unnecessarily. The introduction part of Komatsu Toko with the manga artist Mitsuyasu (Ando Masanobu) and also with her school friend Shima Keigo (Mikata Ryosuke) is very well described in the first episode. We don’t feel any starting trouble while connecting their relationship. One of the best scenes in the drama is where Toko gives emotional strength to a little girl and that in turn affected Mitsuyasu.

The transition of Mitsuyasu, from a very introverted, shy manga artist to a better version when he fell in love was beautifully portrayed by Ando Masanobu.

We feel a slight inclination towards the character Shima Keigo, because of his understanding nature and of course the decent and genuine expression of his feelings.

The dilemma faced by Azumi when she feels like she is cheating on her husband, with her younger colleague Takano Masami (Seto Toshiki) and the way she handles herself even though she has feelings for Masami were heart touching.

The Disappointing Factor

Though the drama completes in 8 episodes, sometimes we feel a little insensible and detached. Some scenes where Toko confuses her decision between Mitsuyasu and Keigo were slightly insensible. The story line and narration could have been much better, so that it can make the audience a bit more excited in waiting for the episodes.

In-Depth Analysis

Komatsu Toko (Renbutsu Misako), a 30 year old single woman, working hard to become a successful hair stylist. Under societal norms, 30 year old unmarried woman is someone represented as an old lady and everyone give dating advices to Toko. But she was always in search of an ideal man for her. One day, Azumi Marisa (Fujii Mina), Toko’s best friend, sought her help for style the award winning manga artist Mitsuyasu. A very introverted, shy person, with messy hair covering his face caught her attention. Toko’s pleasant and positive attitude attracted Mitsuyasu and she even helped him to reach the destination. Then Toko meets her high school friend and crush Shima Keigo (Mikata Ryosuke), and came to know that he is a colleague of Azumi. Keigo was happy to see Toko and he was thrilled to express his love towards her for which he was waiting for all these years. Yes, there starts the love triangle.

Takano Masami (Seto Toshiki), the young colleague, always had feelings for his senior Azumi. Eventhough Azumi is married, the spiciness of her marriage has lost somewhere in between their busy office lives. Azumi also felt attracted towards Masami, but she restrains herself from going further until it reached to a point where she had to end her married life.

Star Power

Casting for this drama is done amazingly well. Renbutsu Misako portrayed the confused soul of Komatsu Toko in a very convincing manner. All the other casts, especially Mitsuyasu played by Ando Masanobu was realistic and good.

Overall Opinion

“Riso no Otoko”, is a cute yet messy love story where we can find the thoughts of unnoticed people in the society. It is a good to go drama…
