Drama Digest

Baki goes to Arizona State Prison to take on the legendary convict known as Mr. Unchained to obtain the abilities he needs to outshine his strong father.

The feel-good part

It’s difficult to hate Baki, the eager combatant, and seeing him back in this sequel trilogy makes us happy. Baki has unquestionably matured as a man and fighter. But, in this third chapter; we witness his maturity take shape.

The disappointing factor

Olivia is built up early on in Hanma Baki to be this near-perfect weapon fighter who might end Baki’s life, but ended up as a letdown. Baki v Olivia is the last bout, and while the two do spar with some impressive martial arts moves, the ultimate result is a fast fight that almost feels like a draw.

Baki Hanma’s first three fights may turn off people who aren’t familiar with his antics, but honestly, these were a little silly.

In-depth analysis

Hanma Baki, commonly known as Hanma Baki – Son of Ogre or just Baki Hanma, is the fifth anime series. The adaptation of the Hanma Baki manga series is a direct sequel to Baki.

Baki Hanma is the son of Yuujiro Hanma, the world’s most potent beast, feared by all nations. He is a one-person army capable of causing or halting an earthquake with his fist alone. With his fists alone, he was known for demolishing massive military operations. Baki Hanma faces up against his father, Yuujiro, who is renowned as the Ogre in the martial arts community. Baki goes to Arizona State Prison to face Biscuit Oliva, the legendary convict known as Mr. Unchained, to obtain the abilities he needs to overcome his powerful father.

Baki Hanma was reared by his affluent and controlling mother, Emi Akezawa, who also finances his training in the hopes that he will one day be as strong as his father. Baki managed to surpass traditional training at the beginning of the series and sets out to follow in his brutal father’s footsteps, encountering many formidable fighters all along the way. Baki eventually confronts his father and is defeated without a battle.

Star power

The leading voice-over of Hanma Baki is the Japanese actor Shimazaki, Nobunaga, who has done a great job in matching his voice for the main character.

Overall opinion

Hanma Baki: Son of Ogre is a fun, action-packed, and a little absurd film. Fans of Baki will undoubtedly like this sequel trilogy, and we can’t say we didn’t enjoy it for what it had to give. Unfortunately, Hanma Baki: Son of Ogre lacks interesting foes and only elevates Baki to a higher degree of maturity. Aside from that, skipping Hanma Baki: Son of Ogre isn’t anything we recommend.
