Investigations into a case involving Fang Yi-pear in the 2020 Taiwanese Netflix original series The Victims’ Game. Investigations into a case involving Fang Yi-jen’s autism are the focus of the story, which centers on the forensic scientist with Asperger’s syndrome, Fang Yi-jen (Joseph Chang), and the investigative journalist Hsu Hai-yin (Ann Hsu).

The Feel-Good Part

The Victims’ Game doesn’t fare much better than its predecessors. Despite having a dramatic and suspenseful plot, the show mostly sticks to the script. The plot was something I had never read or heard of before, and it was obvious to me that the writers had spent a lot of time considering and studying everything as thoroughly as they could. The film crew shared a lot of what they did, including interviewing mental health professionals, reporters, and police officers, as well as the lengths they went to in order to try to get a “message” across, in the last five to six minutes of each episode, which actually delves heavily into the production process. The murder mysteries weren’t the main course; they were more of a side show. The plot is extremely ambitious and incorporates far too many complex themes, including mental illness, many forms of societal injustice, transgender concerns, terminal disease, corporate greed, vengeance, and atonement, in addition to the ultimate and incredibly weighty question, “To be or not to be.” The exceptional quality of the production shines through in the incredibly startling and gory crime scene details as well as the unvarnished exposure of the tedious and tiring clutter of everyday existence.

The Disappointing Factor

The show’s authors were attempting to do too much in too few episodes, which could make it less enjoyable for viewers who watch it more infrequently. Whilst the overlapping themes and subtle subtleties were incredibly thought-provoking, not everyone finds these kinds of things appealing or looks for them in a drama. Moreover, there were obvious areas where they were attempting to tie up loose ends, which to me felt a little forced. I believe the drama’s emotional effect would have been significantly higher if there had been more episodes and they had the opportunity to shoot more scenes and “full up” the tale. More time to bond with the characters would have been nice as well. But what they managed to accomplish in eight episodes is already quite impressive to me.

In-Depth Analysis

This brief, intense, and gritty criminal thriller centers on a gruesome string of killings that are unexplainably connected to Aspergic forensic analyst Fang Yiren’s estranged teenage daughter. He joins forces with Xu Haiyin, a resourceful but rather naive and ambitious young journalist, to solve the cases in a desperate attempt to locate her. They make a strange but effective partnership because, although her intuition and capacity for persuasion show the why, his painstaking forensic work reveals the how.

Star Power

Tiffany Hsu’s portrayal of Xu Hai-Yin served as Fang Yi-Main Ren’s adversary. Hsu’s character used empathy to her advantage to obtain the information she needed to write about, whereas Chang’s character struggled to comprehend emotions and appear “normal.” She portrays the brave journalist who will take any necessary steps to succeed in this society, including using unlawful tactics to gather information. Although I felt that her past was a little forced in regard to the story’s main theme, she was given gratifying closure in the end. Although the two characters’ interactions were scripted to be awkward and stocky, their chemistry was surprisingly entertaining to see and improved as the show’s end approached. Chang and Hsu should collaborate once more because they complimented one another so beautifully.

Overall Opinion

This show has been beautifully crafted, with its pros far outweighing its cons, and one should definitely give this show a try.
