Drama digest

The Last Goodbye to Mama is a tale of hope and misery centered on the lives of a woman and her child from Subei’s tiny hamlet.

Ding Xiaojun was born in the province of Northern Jiangsu. Ding Biyun, his mother, was diagnosed with malignant bone metastases on New Year’s Eve in 2010. Ding Xiaojun left his work in the large metropolis to aid his mother in his hometown.

The feel-good part

The story flows well from past to present during the first half of the novel. The character’s back-story was well-explained. We saw Bi Yun’s challenges and resilience in life as she dealt with broken promises, divorce, being a single parent, and finally, surviving illness till the end.

The disappointing factor

Although there is a romantic element, it is not a fairytale romance that will make viewers weep over the pair.

The handiest disappointing component of this drama is that it’s far too lovable and emotional to end.

In-depth analysis

This drama series is based on Bu Liang Sheng’s novel “99 Things with My Mom.”

Ding Bi Yun (Dong Jie) is a single parent, who is not only battling poverty but also attempting to raise her young son in China’s Jiangsu Province in the late 1980s. Life is a daily struggle for her as she strives for financial stability and keeps her kid on track with his schoolwork and emotional development. She falls in love with a man but is devastated when he was forced to leave overseas, leaving her and her kid alone. She stays strong, and her son, Ding Xiao Jun (Yin Fang), is finally accepted to a major institution.

When talent scouts approach Ding Xiao Jun, he believes he might start his future as an entertainer or model in Japan. However, Ding Xiao Jun’s scheme fails, and he is left penniless. His mother comes to his aid once more, assisting him in returning to his studies. He graduates in 2010 and finds his soul mate in the big city. When he discovers that his mother has been diagnosed with a fatal disease, he is set to start his career as a media professional and propose to his partner. He feels compelled to return to his homeland to care for her in her last days.

The actors did a fantastic job capturing the characters’ personalities and feelings.

Overall opinion

The Last Goodbye to Mama is an emotional yet very beautifully-portrayed drama series. This series isn’t something you’ll want to see again as it’s so passionate. However, it is a lovely narrative of hardships, dreams, and strength for first-time viewers.
