Drama Digest

For a compelling purpose, a young man travels to Hong Kong to study psychiatry. His mother and brother were diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 24 due to a genetic condition in his family, and he is determined to avoid the same destiny.

The Feel-Good Part

The screenplay is mostly excellent. The primary and supporting characters were well-written, and the main plot and several subplots were well-connected. The way they interacted with the many characters was smooth and seamless, with no awkward or manufactured moments. The little story arcs, notably the one involving heterochromia and red velvet, were extremely intriguing and inventive. That plot twist at the end wasn’t exactly unexpected, but it did seem to fit with Li Jia’s overall story, so credit to the writers for not being predictable.

The Disappointing Factor

At times, there were significant pace concerns. The chapter about green nails was a little too long, and the Halloween sequence was a little too long. But it was the rushed finale that will irritate the most. Aside from a solid beginning, the most crucial aspect of any drama is the climax, and the writers didn’t do the show justice with that unsatisfying conclusion.

In-Depth Analysis

It describes a variety of fascinating and heartwarming situations that Li Jia and his roommates had. As a student in Hong Kong, Li Jia looks for a room to rent in Repulse Bay, Wan Chai, and other areas.

Li Jia (Joseph Zeng), who suffers the great mental weight of inheriting his family’s genes, stubbornly decides to go to Hong Kong for his education after his brother and mother were both diagnosed with schizophrenia. He meets the eccentric Zhang Chacha (Cherry Ngan) and human anatomy student Shi Cheng during house searching (Zhou Chengao).

Li Jia encounters Xiao Xi (Feng Jiangyu), known as the “sharp master,” while looking for a place to stay.

Star Power

The core cast performed an excellent job with their portrayals, which included both friendship and love aspects. The bromance between Li Jia and Shi Cheng, performed by Joseph Zeng and Zhou Cheng Ao, was particularly enjoyable. Zhang Cha Cha, played by Cherrie Ngan, grew tremendously as a character.

Overall Opinion

The intriguing notion of The Journey Across the Night unfolds slowly but steadily across the 26 episodes, with some dramatic and thrilling moments at the culmination of various story arcs or chapters. These chapters are “mini-mysteries” that centre on unexpected happenings affecting various odd individuals and are resolved in 4 to 5 episodes, while the overarching plot involving Li Jia and his affliction reaches its apex in the last episode.
