Love is True is not your usual romantic drama where a guy falls in love with a girl and they have a happy ending. It has women as centerpieces. We see them growing, learning to accept themselves, moving ahead in career and life, and making choices that are so hard to make, but still normal for women. What drew me to the drama is the fact that romance is a backdrop rather than being the main plot. There is no lead character and no villain, everyone person makes their choices. It’s upon the viewers to evaluate whether they see the character as a hero or a villain.
The Disappointing Factor
The length! Oh, the length of the drama! 40 episodes, although almost every episode has a cliffhanger, going through 40 episodes will make you feel like watching a daily TV soap. There is no solid plot as the drama is character-driven, which is a boon and a curse as you do not know and cannot guess what will happen. It gets infuriating at times when the characters don’t do what you would expect them to do and act differently. Some instances might almost make you drop the drama but you will surely be rewarded if you hang on.
In-depth Analysis
Since there is no fixed plot, the drama progresses at a slow pace, which becomes a bit boring at times. The drama is not as exciting as there are no extra romance, villains, or comedy tropes. It fixates on a few women and their struggle to succeed and live their life. It is a great drama for people who are not into cliché or cheesy settings.
Star Power
Liu Tao is as amazing in Love is True as she was in ‘Ode to Joy.’ She completely mesmerizes viewers with her grace and beauty. Her acting is top-notch as always. One cannot imagine anyone else in the main role except her. Du Chun and Li Nian are perfect in their roles as well. The whole caste fits with the characters too well.

If you are bored of the usual Chinese dramas that show nothing but cliché romance and love triangles, Love is True is the perfect drama for you to watch, admire women, feel proud about being a woman (if you are one), and simply celebrate womanhood.
