Drama Digest

Cry Me A River of Star is a historical romantic comedy involving a bit of fantasy element in it. This Chinese series is about Tao Jun, a handsome and brave Magistrate who arrives in the country of Biyun in order to investigate a case. There, he meets A Fan, a sweet and brave girl who belongs to the Qianli community. The people of the Qianli community are special as the tears they cry are of blue colour. Initially, A Fan was targeted by Tao Jun Ran regarding the investigation but later was found innocent. They start a love-hate relationship with a lot of teasing and bickering. However, what will be the future of their relationship?

The Feel-Good Part

The drama has a dreamy aesthetic along with very pretty visuals. The characters are well-written and even more, well-executed. The series has a very simple story with absolutely lovable characters. The male lead is a simple man who is hard-working and very responsible towards his duty. In the series, he deeply loves and adores the female lead and is very dedicated to her. The female lead is very sweet and caring as well. Though most of the time, she is the damsel in distress but she is very brave and headfast as well. The characters have justifiable screentime which makes them shine well. There are a lot of cute and funny scenes throughout the series. The bickering and teasing of the main characters will double you up with laughter and their romance will give you butterflies in your stomach.

The Disappointing Factor

The story has a light beginning but gradually becomes messy and complicated. There are a few scenes which lack logic and are hard to understand. Midway through the series, many scenes are included which are unnecessary and do not contribute anything substantial to the development of the storyline. After the first few episodes, the series starts to lose its charm and is also criticised for its unreal depiction of the lead characters.

In-Depth Analysis

An adaptation of a Chinese novel by the same name, the name of the series ‘Chun Lai Zhen Xing He’ literally translates to ‘Sleeping in the Galaxy in Spring’. The series is a light-hearted romantic comedy show about Tao Jun Ran, a new Magistrate in the Biyun country and A Fan, who is a barge owner. Tao Jun Ran has arrived to solve a case which was unsolved for a long time and is in search of a person named Lian Qi. There, he came across A Fan, who belongs to the Qianli community. Tao Jun Ran initially thinks A Fan is connected with the case and tries to get close to her in order to gain information regarding the case and A Fan wanted to get close to the magistrate to gain some favours. However, with time things take a different turn and they decide to get married, but still, things don’t work out the way they thought as some unexpected conflicts take place.

Star Power

The lead characters of Tao Jun Ran is played by Luo Zheng and A Fan is played by Huang Ri Ying, who is famous for her roles in ancient dramas. The supporting cast includes Wen Zhu, Feng Li Jun, Hugh Wang and Sang Na among others.

Overall Opinion

Although the series takes a turn for the worse at some parts, it does its job right in serving ethereal visuals and dying for romantic moments. If some of the pointless scenes are overlooked, then Cry Me a River of Stars is a pretty decent watch.
