Drama Digest

This drama is the continuation of the infamous ‘Candle in the tomb’ series, which first aired in 2016. Till now, ‘Candle in the tomb’ has released three parts, and the actors have retained their original characters. It is a fantasy series where three experienced tomb raiders set out to discover the truth behind a mysterious city.

The feel-good part

The first season of the series was hugely influential and the actors were applauded for their work. The retention of the original actors was a major plus point as it helps to build trust among the viewers. The production quality and the adaptation were the main factors of the show. The hint of Chinese heritage incorporated into all three seasons really stands out.

The disappointing factor

Compared to the first season, the third season is not up to the mark. The pacing is unbelievably slow, and the main story doesn’t start until half of the show. The unnecessary romance plot was a huge let down, mostly because it came at the moment when it was not needed. There are some recurring scenes in the drama which are boring to watch.

In-depth analysis

This series is originally based on a novel and it stays true to it. This third season is based on the novel ‘Ghost Blows Out the Light’ by Zhang Muye. The story is based on supernatural elements and themes. The title itself tells us that the story concerns to some tomb. The name of this tomb is ‘Worm Valley.’ A gang of three people is formed who happen to be tomb raiders. All three became tomb raiders from different incidents. The names of these three people are Hu Bai, Shirley Yang, and Fatty Wang or Wang Kaixuan. All these three have different life stories which are as follows:

  1. Hu Bayi- He is the main protagonist of the drama. He is a former military man who has become a tomb raider by chance. His family has had a history of tomb raiding as his grandfather was a tomb raider too. He is a smart and charismatic personality who is well-versed in Astrology and Fengshui (the Chinese word for Chinese Geomancy).
  2. Shirley Yang: She is a female photographer who has worked for the very popular ‘National Geographic.’ She is Chinese but was born in America. A mature lady who is both good-looking and cool-minded, she was the main sponsor of this tour of tomb reading.
  3. Fatty Wang: He is the person that Hu Bayi trusts the most. He might get greedy at some times but always comes to the rescue. He secretly handles any issues concerning the group without letting the others take the burden.

These three people have been raiding the mysterious city for a long time now and their purpose of raiding was to find out the truth behind the mysterious curse. In the current that means the third season, they have reached a tomb of the ancient Dian kingdom, and their main task is finding out the truth behind a certain artifact. The journey doesn’t end here and the series might get a fourth season.

Star power

All the three main leads have done an excellent job portraying their respective characters. Their retention gave a sense of trust and relief to the audience. They stayed true to their roles and characters, which was relieving to watch.

Overall opinion

Though the series has won awards, it could not carry itself as well in the recent season as it did in the first one. Nonetheless, it is still a decent one to watch.
