Anime Digest

The events revolve around Makoto Misumi, an earth dweller, who is summoned to the other world to be the “hero”. His ordinary school-going life gets interrupted as he is summoned due to a mysterious pact between his parents and the goddess. On reaching the alternate world, he is instantly discarded by the Goddess herself as she finds Makoto’s face to be “ugly”. She abandons him and Makoto is thrown into the “wasteland” where he encounters the wilderness and its beings. He comes in contact with dragons, dwarfs, spiders, orcs,  and other fantastical beings who fascinate him and being from different worlds, Makoto could exhibit his special powers before them and unleashes the magic within. He fights all the odds in this new world and survives each blow that has been bestowed upon him after being forsaken by the other two worlds.

The Feel-Good Part

The tussle between the earth and the godly world is beyond imagination and is full of scenic beauty which is nevertheless a treat to the eyes. The goddess’s vanity resulting in Makoto’s banishment and the juxtaposed story of Makoto’s survival is extremely captivating as it builds up Makoto’s character as that of a worthy hero.

Makoto’s yearning for the past life and the people within is one of the many noteworthy events. The anime also brings out the story of ‘in betweens’, where individuals try to figure out their location in between the two extremes- the earth dwellers and the Gods. The scenes and the illustrations are a delight for the eyes and make the entire watch thoroughly delightful.

The Disappointing Factor

The trope of a forsaken hero is an overly exploited one, which makes the story of Makoto to be one inclusive of the factors that we might have watched earlier. His relationship with the other earthlings is poorly developed as we see him yearning but never living with them. Makoto is constantly indulged in numerous fights which strips him of any peace and makes his decisions quite predictable.

In-Depth Analysis

Makoto is essentially a character that is trapped between the powers of the Gods who consistently deny his “hero” identity and the fantastical beings who bring out the hero element in him. The wars that he fights in are in a way his quest with destiny which makes the entire anime more interesting and set it apart from any other hero with a similarly adventurous life.

The animation is very satisfying in a wholesome manner as it brings out every nook and corner of the world with utmost detail and the songs are just a cherry on the top. The plot is one that exhibits a sense of social reform in various worlds.

Star Power

Being voiced by  Natsuki Hanae, Makoto’s character is indeed one of the most legendary and influential ones.
