Anime Digest

Astral power is a force that surrounds the world by astral magicians. The “Empire,” fearful of its devastating power, persecutes people who demonstrate their powers. To flee their captors, the suffering wizards established the Nebulis Sovereignty. Since then, the two countries have been at war for more than a century. Iska, a skilled knight, is sentenced to prison for committing the dreadful crime of releasing an imprisoned witch. A year later, the Empire’s leadership chooses to release him on the condition that he hunts down a terrifying wizard known as the “Ice Calamity Witch.” Iska agrees in the hopes of bringing the war to an end. Aliceliese “Alice” Lou Nebulis XI, the Ice Calamity Witch, also hopes for peace. As Iska and Alice both wish for a crusade that will transform the world into one without battle, suffering, or misery, fate’s strings bind them increasingly closer together, forging a relationship that exceeds mere coincidence.

The Feel-Good Part

Silver Link has always impressed us with their animation quality, and the same can be said of this anime. The artwork is gorgeous and fantastic—especially during some of the significant battles—and the character designs are mesmerizing. Iska and Alice feel rejuvenating. The animation and the artwork stand out the most.

The Disappointing Factor

The underlying theme in the plot is the power of coincidences, which is quite interesting. The power of coincidences is enormous. However, the animators and the director could have worked smarter to promote this theme appropriately in the scenes throughout the anime. Good plot but a lousy direction.

In-Depth Analysis

Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World at first appears to be a romantic anime but we later find out that it is not. Instead, this series concentrates on building the main characters and their motivations behind battling, and occasionally a random crisis will arise that opposing forces must work together to resolve. It results in Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World feeling more like meaningless drama for our heroes to slog through.

Star Power

The voice actors do just fine.

Overall Opinion

You might enjoy watching it because of the fantastic animation. Besides, the plot is good but lacks directing.
