Distributed by Netflix, What Happened to Mr. Cha (차인표) is a South-Korean comedy film about Cha In-Pyo, unfortunately, buried under enormous rubble during the reconstruction of a building complex. The comedy ensues when he tries to find his way out of the bricks while maintaining his elegance and aura. With a running time of hundred-and-five minutes, the film is both directed and written by Kim Dong-Kyu. It hit the theaters on 1st January 2021.
The Feel-Good Part
If you like traditional humourous media, then the one thing you can expect from What Happened to Mr. Cha is bouts of laughter. The attempts made by Mr. Cha remain iconic, with slapstick comedy increasing the effect. It is amusing to see the main character not care about his dog when it is priceless to his life, leaving the movie’s ratings alone.
The Disappointing Factor
Although the screenwriters have aimed to deliver a cheerful time to their viewers, it fails to have depth in the script. At one point, the audience starts to question the naturalness of the conversations. It feels a bit dissociated with the production. They pointed out the over-exaggeration of the comedic scenes that deteriorated the hilarity.
In-Depth Analysis
The story opens with the man himself, Cha In-Pyo. He is someone who enjoyed the time of his life in the 1990s. Being extremely popular within the neighborhood and adored by all, he is not used to the lack of attention. Reminiscing about the glory of his past days, he misses the old times in his very heart. In the present time, he goes to the gym to restore a gist of his history and improve his body. He accidentally gets engulfed under the building that workers are renovating. The comedy follows when he tries his best to maintain his glorious image while being in danger of getting crushed by the ruins of the building.
