Movie Digest

Peninsula takes place 4 years after the zombie apocalypse in Train to Busan. Due to the decimation of the Korean peninsular region, Jung Seok, a former soldier who managed to go overseas, is assigned a mission to return, where he discovers survivors unexpectedly.

The Feel-Good Part

The execution of action sequences is spectacular. The CGI is realistic, which adds to the viewing experience.

The Disappointing Factor

From a horror standpoint, there isn’t anything here to relate with that you couldn’t find in a better-executed version of Train to Busan. The film was weak in storytelling and developing character depth.

In-Depth Analysis

The film is the sequel to the 2016 horror film Train to Busan. It sets in a post-apocalyptic world populated by youthful heroes and astonishingly believable villains. We learn more about the virus’ origins, but the zombies remain the same as in the first film: rage-filled, swift, and lethal. The film focuses on the minds of individuals who live in the peninsular region. The main inspiration for the terror and action is their mental state, which worsened after being cut off from the rest of the world. Peninsula also concentrates on characters struggling with greed, making amends for mistakes made in the past, and the collapse of social systems among the people. Peninsula presents a great setting and a cast of characters but offers little insight into either. With a lackluster script and characters to watch, you will start ticking off the many other films from which Peninsula borrows. On a technical level, the film did a great job in cinematography, lighting, CGI, action sequences, etc. There is nothing wrong with a movie being entertaining, but when the original gave it such high regard, the sequel is under even more pressure to live up to those great expectations. Peninsula is a thrilling trip with nonstop action that revisits many of the same themes of the original movie.

Star Power

Lee Jung Hyun (Min Jung) is Peninsula’s heart and soul, and she keeps your attention every second she’s on-screen. All the actors gave their best in this film.

Overall Opinion

It is a great attempt to give a sequel to Train to Busan, but it was not up to the expectation. But it is still a fun zombie to watch!
