Movie Digest

As Earth’s resources become scarcer, the world’s prominent scientists took several species of animals and plants to Mars for study. They hope to improve the Martian environment and make it habitable for humans using modern science and technology. The experiment began to lose control due to a meteor hit. The organisms evolved, gaining considerable attack strength and intellect. The Mars Project Alliance’s entire team of experts was at stake. China dispatched astronauts to Mars. These astronauts rush against the clock to finish the rescue operation.

The Feel-Good Part

There is nothing, in particular, to pinpoint the feel-good part of this film.

The Disappointing Factor

The sci-fi elements are not as fun or effective as expected. They did not give a good explanation or back-story for a couple of scenarios in the film.

In-Depth Analysis

Mutation on Mars has everything you expect in these sci-fi films – the base on Mars, spaceships, weird mutated creatures, the struggle for survival, and a mad scientist. It had a decent start giving us insight into the story. There is no original or unique factor to this film. Director Na Liu does an excellent job of keeping the plot moving and the pace quick. She receives assistance from the VFX crew, and the CGI, which is typically poor in these films, is impressive. For a change, the model work is also surprisingly good. It is a step forward for Chinese science fiction and creature films on effects and action scenes. However, it is a step back in terms of plotting. While it will play well in its own country, the overt propaganda will turn off foreign audiences.

Star Power

The acting was not that remarkable. It did not elevate the plot or the overall experience of the film.

Overall Opinion

If you are looking for a mindless sci-fi movie to pass the time, this film is a good option.
