Damp Season tells the story of Dong and Juan, a dysfunctional young couple. The emotional drift between the primary protagonist is the key theme. They lived in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen. The story takes place during the wet season, when humidity levels are extremely high. Dong was a security guard at an old amusement park that had closed down. His ambition was to be a theatrical actor and perform as the Monkey King. Juan used to work in a flower shop. They were constantly at odds with one another. They gradually drifted apart and began seeking meaning and connection with strangers. They begin a covert relationship out of a desire for warmth.
The Feel Good Part
The human personality and emotions are well-represented. The music is wonderfully suited to the scenes. The visuals are stunning.
The Disappointing Factor
The scenes can appear lifeless and excessive at times. The narration’s power was diminished by the movie’s slow pace.
In-Depth Analysis
This film makes excellent use of the humid weather to create a melancholy vibe amongst the characters. Dong and Juan began dating other individuals. Dong met Yuan, an ex-dancer. Mr. Long, the proprietor of the flower shop where Juan worked, drew Juan’s attention. The four lonely individuals formed a connection. Dong and Juan began meeting with Yuan and Long on a more regular basis. Dong and Juan’s communication gradually deteriorated. The humid environment brilliantly symbolizes the lack of communication and empty relationships. The young couple began to recognize themselves in the other two characters, who are equally sad and lonely.
Star Power
The major characters were Yucong Huan and Xuanyu Chen. They excel at portraying the main characters anguish and discomfort on screen.
Overall Opinion
The film is excellent and heartbreaking. The director masterfully captures the ambiguity and melancholy of a romantic connection. Despite its limitations, the film is nonetheless a powerful piece of work.
