Drama Digest:

A Thai BL series called ‘What If’ centers on two musically inclined childhood best friends. The main characters are two neighbors who become friends over guitar lessons. The plot follows the people from adolescent to young adulthood as they mature. One leaves for college while the other stays in high school due to their age differences. They must make this relationship withstand their time apart. Although the series starts out well, What If loses steam halfway through and sputters to a close. Despite early promise, the uninteresting BL drama has no significant developments. A potential romance between childhood best friends is hinted at in the plot, but it never really takes off. Any excitement I had when the story originally began was diminished by the disappointing conclusion.

The Feel-Good Part:

What If opens with two quite enjoyable episodes. The main characters in this series are beautifully introduced, with emphasis on their personalities and common interests. The early scenes foster their close friendship by showing how well-suited the leads get along.

The Disappointing Factor:

There is no spark, desire, or intimacy in the timid scenes and dull encounters. Midway through, the plot loses steam and ends suddenly before anything significant occurs. The rest of the uninteresting BL drama doesn’t see the leads’ romance develop particularly.

In-Depth Analysis:

Peach and Smart were best friends growing up. These two neighbors got to know one another when they were young. As they became close through their music classes, Peach taught Smart how to play the guitar. They spent a lot of time together and remained good friends over the years. Peach is currently getting ready to enroll at a university. He seldom pays attention to academics and mainly worries about playing music with his band. Despite being a year younger, Smart is a talented student who supports his friend’s academic efforts. Peach prioritizes his time with Smart even when his bandmates invite him to hang around. As a result, their platonic bond grows stronger.

Star Power:

Pupa and Nobel, two young performers, play the roles of the characters’ younger selves. They acted as the main characters’ younger selves in the well-known 2020 Thai BL serial I Told Sunset About You. Peach’s closest friend is Smart. They have been neighbors and friends since they were young, becoming close because of their shared passion for music. Peach is a year older than Smart, but Smart is a more serious student. When Smart is older, he wants to pursue a career as a singer. Smart’s closest friend is Peach. Since they were young children, they have shared a house next door. Throughout their teenage years, Peach taught Smart how to play the guitar. Peach is not serious about his education. He performs in a band with Gun and Gang.

Overall Opinion:

Although What If has a nice ending, the dull finale lacks intrigue. Instead of delving into the couple’s emotions, the majority of the finale is spent singing and creating songs. You’ll see that the production value is more mediocre than unwatchable after some thought. Disappointment with the later episodes will be mitigated by the captivating first half. Sadly, What If is unable to transform a priceless childhood relationship into an enthralling romance. You’ll feel more like you’re in a bromance than a BL. You won’t see two lovers, simply two friends.
