Drama Digest

Jian Xiao Meng has always dreamed of having the perfect boyfriend. She is stuck in the rut with her evil boss at her desk job. She seen participates in closed beta test game called Destined. The game transforms her into the Ninth Princess of Ruoshui Country, where her journey to find love in the ancient period begins with a man who resembles her boss. Meng Meng makes her way through hardships and complicated dynamic changes of the fantasy world, full of mystery and excitement. It is a direct adaptation of the novel- Queen Lord Don’t Be Too Cute.

The Feel-Good Part

This is a cute and wholesome romantic experience accompanied by lots of humour. It is exciting to watch Meng Meng make her way through the rocky terrain of the ancient world filled with elements of fantasy and mystery. It is really fun to watch her learn things about love and life during her journey, which adds depth to the plot but doesn’t get too philosophical. It weaves the meaningful moments with the light-hearted tone of the plot extremely well. The characters are incredibly memorable and fun to watch; all of them have their own place in the show and bring a unique perspective to the plot. No character feels wasted, some of them are there for the comical aspects of the show while as others are to accentuate the romantic plotlines. The Original Soundtrack is really good. It is beautifully produced and rendered in a way that adds to the heart-warming nature of the show. The villain was an interesting character because it is hard to say that her nature was purely antagonistic, which is proof of the complexity of the story.

The Disappointing Factor

Meng Meng’s character came off as extremely childish and naïve at certain times, which got frustrating and annoying to watch quite quickly. The show also takes a dark downturn, which may give viewers whiplash as it was supposed to be light-hearted.  The story dragged quite a bit midway as a lot of the plotlines felt unnecessary and didn’t add much to the overarching story. The series promises a lot more romance than it actually delivers, which is disappointing. The last episode doesn’t end on a satiating note, it is messy and doesn’t wrap the series in a way that’s enjoyable.

In-Depth Analysis

The series’ main flaw is the way it ends. It is a long show that should give viewers a cathartic viewing experience because of the time they have invested in it. The characters are a delight on screen, even the ones in the background add to the comedic aspect of the show. There are a lot of things that weren’t explained as well maybe since it was adapted from the book, this confusing element could have been avoided to give the audience a more enjoyable experience.

Star Power

The cast did an incredible job; all the characters were executed perfectly. Hun Wu specifically was exceptionally as he played is double role in a way that was believable.

Overall Opinion

All in all, this show has a high entertainment value and should be watched for people who love dramas centred around romance in an ancient setting.
