As we all are aware, anime is known for its inventiveness in recreating folklore with unique fantasy creatures. Water is an element that can be personified as soft and ethereal as the seafoam lingers on a sun-soaked beach or is overpowered and threatening as a storm-tossed tsunami. From ocean gods to sirens to fish people, these water creatures seem to litter folklore and anime, too. Water spirits and gods often have the power that echoes the might of the tides, while some humble creatures merely carry the sweet traits of their sea brethren.
1. Undine- Black Clover
Undine is the spirit of water that has served the princesses and the queens of the Heart Kingdom for generations. She is currently serving Princess Lolopechka and temporarily gets transferred to Noelle Silva. She takes the form of a beautiful woman whose gown and long hair are made of water, blue eyes, in place of ears fish-like fins, and pale skin that almost looks blue.
2. Aqua Ushered- KonoSuba
Aqua Ushered is the aptly named water goddess deuteragonist of the anime. She has blue eyes, a navy outfit, and long blue ombré hair resembling a sailor suit. She is once tasked with escorting human souls into their next life. She is known for being impetuous and often making big decisions on the fly. She can manipulate and summon water at will.
3. Noonsa- Slayers
Noonsa is a fisherman and has the body of a fish and the arms and legs of a human. Lina, the protagonist, is horrified by the idea of him kissing her. He is the henchman of Zelgadis Graywords. He can walk on land and swim in the water. He is seen to be clumsy in the water.
4. Undine- One Piece
It is a pirate anime taking place on the high seas; it is filled with creatures like Undine. Depending on the body of water in which the Undine was born, their bodies differ in style and shape. They also can control the water they come from. The Undine is one of the four elemental nymphs in Nam, alongside the fiery Floga, the tree spirits Dryads, and the Flampuria, which were born of ash.
5. Ika- Squid Girl
Ika Musume is the main protagonist of Shinryaku! She is a squid-human hybrid from the sea with plans to invade humanity as a punishment for polluting the ocean. However, after causing damage to the beach house, she gets forced to work as a waitress to pay for the damages. Later, she begins living at the residence of the owners of the said beach house.
6. Hugo- The Ancient Magus’ Bride
Hugo is an Angelica’s Familiar and a Vodyanoi. The Vodyanoi of the Slavic folklore are males who feel treacherous. They are given habits like dragging or drowning lost travelers to use as servants. Hugo is a water spirit with a face like a frog and a body similar to the Salvic depictions of the creature. He is serving Angelica Barley.
7. Pseudowater- Made In Abyss
He is one of the most terrifying water creatures due to his deceptive appearance in the anime. Also called a Water Imitator, he looks like freshwater, tempting a thirsty and lost drinker. Once an ignorant person partakes, their fate gets sealed as the deadly parasite takes effect. They lay eggs in the digestive system, which causes acute distress and ultimately their death.
8. Sloth- Fullmetal Alchemist
In the anime, the most frightening homunculus is the sharp-toothed Sloth. It has dark, stringy hair that obscures its single white eye, gray skin, and the large mass of a whale or shark. It is known for being the fastest of the homunculi.
9. Salmon-Chan - Shake-Chan
Salmon-Chan is the protagonist who details the salmon girl’s adventure as she tries to participate in the natural food chain. She was rejected when she tried to let a bear eat her. Her strange visage perturbs fishermen, and campers do not want to catch her. She has an odd appearance; at first, she can be mistaken for a regular salmon.
10. Numano Himemiko- Kamisama Kiss
This anime is filled with animal-themed yokai, like Numano Himemiko, the catfish princess of the Tatara Swamp. She falls in love with a human boy and pines for him from afar. She appears in two forms: her catfish and her human form.
