Movie Digest

Mi Rae, a 29-year-old video game developer, becomes nauseated one day. She discovers that the hangover was because of her body’s pregnancy. Mi Rae is thrown into a frenzy of ambiguity by denial, panic, and confusing messages from friends, family, and the law. But time is running out for her to make up her mind. Mi Rae finds herself in the center of a strange new world.

The Feel-Good Part

The film uses a good amount of comedy throughout the film to educate the audience about the issues young women deal with in Korea and the world.

The Disappointing Factor

The film tried to cramp a lot of important issues. But in doing so, the plot loses sight of the main character and her situation occasionally.

In-Depth Analysis

Ten Months is a light-hearted look at an unplanned pregnancy and the turmoil that follows when one enters it entirely unprepared. Namkoong Sun’s approach to the subject feels fresh despite repeating classic clichés, which is a triumph in and of itself. The director is particularly interested in researching what Korean youngsters experience when life eventually throws a sucker punch in the face. The accidental pregnancy in the film demonstrates how rebellious young people frequently wind up doing things they never wanted to do. When adult duties arrive, the director vividly portrays the youth forced into a conventional way of life. The director also touches on big problems such as abortion, marriage, single parenthood, postpartum depression, and the country’s current job issues. Even in its darkest moments, the film maintains its sense of humor while never losing empathy for its heroine. The cinematography includes some fascinating frames, particularly during doctor appointments. But in general, it concentrates on reality without exaltation.

Star Power

Choi Sung-Eun did an impressive performance embodying the character of Mi Rae. The supporting cast also helped to elevate her performance and the story.

Overall Opinion

Ten Months is an indie cinema that is both intriguing and fun. Do give this film a try!
