Movie Digest

Written and directed by Nam Seung-Suk, Musoon, Across the Universe (무순, 세상을 가로질러) is a South-Korean documentary type of movie that launched in theatres on April 22nd 2021. The movie comments on the chaos, i.e., life and the need to find ourselves a “reset” button. The protagonist and his best friend embark on an eleven-day-long journey to rediscover their new selves and search for an alternative or a meaning to better themselves.

The Feel-Good Part

In the present modern-day capitalist world, our life seems out of our hands, leaving us with feelings of anxiety and alienation. When dealing with these pangs of doubt, it is recommended to escape your reality for a little while. This movie is perfect if you feel caught in a loop of difficult times of burnout or stress.

The Disappointing Factor

The screenplay writer could have put a bit more emphasis on the cinematography aspect of the documentary movie, considering the focus on the wonders of the environment. The lack of an inspiring soundtrack is also a down point that plays an enormous factor.

In-Depth Analysis

Exhausted by earning through a myriad of part-time jobs, like working in a sandwich shop or as a guitarist in a musical band, Kwon Mu-Soon feels disconnected from himself. With the same experience, Park Tae-Won, his friend, decides to wander into the wild, going into a reassessment of their true selves, away from the hustle and bustle of the metropolitan city. They undertake a journey to run from Busan to Seoul for ten days, absorbing the much-required freshness prevalent in the beauties of nature. They use this method to get back on track in their lives.

 Star Power

The cast consists of ordinary people of the Republic People of Korea who have no acting background in the past. Kwon Mu-Soon plays the part-timer worker, whereas Park Tae-Won plays his friend. The director, Name Seung-Suk, has also directed Sentimental Education (2020).

Overall Opinion

The aim of the movie is most fitting, considering the choice of the cast. It works best in arousing the sentiments of the everyday working youth.
