The movie is set in 1940, during the outburst of World War ll. Yusaku is a well-established merchant and an amateur filmmaker. He senses that things are headed in an unsettling direction. He witnesses some things, during his trip to Manchuria, and films them secretly. Now he is determined to expose them.

His wife, Satoko, receives a visit from her childhood who is now a policeman. He tells her that the woman her husband brought from his trip to Manchuria, is dead and that they are now keeping a close eye on Yusaku and his whereabouts.

She confronts him and the revelations are life-changing. She is now conflicted between her adhesion towards her husband and the country they call home.

The Feel-Good Part

The whole plot of the story is intriguing and keeps you on your toes. Wife of a spy takes you out of your comfort zone and keeps you enthralled and curious till the end of the movie.

The Disappointing Factor

The movie is good but it lacks something. There are many things that are not explained and you don’t know who was right and who was wrong. The movie ends on kind of a cliffhanger and the mystery is unsolved.

In-Depth Analysis

The story revolves around Yūsaku Fukuhara and his wife Satoko. He is a well-off merchant Satoko is an actress.

One day, Yusaku goes on a business trip to Manchuria. The trip gets extended for two more weeks, and when he returns, he comes home with a woman about whom he never told anything to his wife earlier. During his trip, he finds some unsettling information and he films it on his camera. He is now determined to not just sit around and do nothing about it, actually do something about that information. Meanwhile, his wife is told by her childhood friend, that the woman her husband brought from the trip is now dead. Satoko becomes more suspicious about his husband. When she confronts him, the revelations are shocking and she doesn’t know whom to trust and whom not to.

Star Power

Takahashi was the perfect choice for the role of the merchant. Aoi Yu is of course an excellent actress who just captivates you with her acting.

Overall Opinion

The storyline is alluring and beguiling. The directors took a daring step in making this movie and it paid off well. The movie will keep you guessing till the last minute and then turn into an unexpected ending.
