Movie Digest

In Shibuya, Tokyo, Agetarou Katsumata’s family owns a pork cutlet restaurant (Tonkatsu). Agetarou will one day inherit the restaurant, but currently, he works in the kitchen doing basic tasks and delivering food orders. He is dissatisfied with this work. Imagine trying to run the family restaurant without any motivation to cook. In this situation, what would you do? Agetarou’s answer is simple: become a professional DJ and show the world how mixing electronic music can make you a better chef.

The Feel-Good Part

Agetarou and his dual life are fascinating, but Tonkatsu DJ Agetarou won’t be appealing without its fantastic side characters. His eccentric family and supporting cast members are a hoot! We have our hero’s father, who cannot give him a break, and his younger sister, who is concerned about his future love life. The DJ Oily is by far the most memorable side character. In times of trouble, he seeks advice from his neighbourhood friends—a gang of mischievous kids. Of course, being a Japanese film based on a manga, the goofiness, absurd jokes, and occasionally even more absurd appearances do not go unnoticed in the neighbourhood, with Agetarou’s friends being the prominent representatives and several of the gags following close behind.

The Disappointing Factor

The storyline is minimal and leans towards a patriarchal society. Agetarou’s father does not let his daughter work as the head chef, who is more dedicated and skilled and could do better than Agetarou.

In-Depth Analysis

Agetarou works in his family’s pork cutlet restaurant but is not satisfied. One day, Agetarou delivers Tonkatsu to the staff of a nightclub. There, he develops an interest in DJing. He sees many parallels between Tonkatsu and DJing. Agetarou decides to become a Tonkatsu DJ.

Tonkatsu DJ Agetarou does an excellent job of presenting the life of a rising DJ star through the eyes of an expert. We see the ambition, creativity, and technical knowledge required to succeed in the professional world of DJing as Agetarou fights his way to the top. Agetarou pursues his dream with the help of his neighbourhood friends and his mentor, DJ Oily, all while dealing with domestic issues, love issues, and various problems. Tonkatsu DJ Agetarou is a hilarious story about an impulsive young boy attempting to forge his path in life while also fulfilling familial and social obligations.

Star Power

The film rushes, likely because it is based on a gag manga keeping things upbeat and making it nearly impossible to become bored. The film remains lighthearted and has a general feel-good vibe. Agetarou has good friends, a lovely family, and is surrounded by helpful people. He is an all-around nice guy. The film is also sentimental in how music brings out the best in people and brings everyone together.

Overall Opinion

Tonkatsu DJ Agetarou does not stand up to logic in particular but is an excellent film. The catchy soundtrack carries the story well. It deserves a watch if one is looking for fun and fabulous characters.
