Movie Digest

A young Zhang Jiaxing, living discreetly in the mountains along with her sisters, is determined to find her father in the city after being humiliated by her classmates. When her close friend’s travel money is accidentally lost, her plan is disrupted. As they are unable to repay the debt and have lost hope of seeing their parents, the girls seek refuge in the pond, where they feel safe and warm.

The Feel-Good Part

The Day is Over is based on a true story that occurred in Anhui, China in 2007. Girls in the mountains wished for their migrant worker fathers to return home, but they could do nothing about it. In the absence of their parents, they make every effort to live independently and tackle life’s obstacles. The film has beautifully shown a great sense of honesty in the portrayal of the child characters.

The Disappointing Factor

The film appeared cliché and had a long-running storyline that could bore you in the first half.

In-Depth Analysis

Three young teenage girls live in a small mountain community that would be considered beautiful if it weren’t so poor, backward, and unsafe. Most of their parents live in Shenzhen or another bustling metropolis. They are battling off bullying classmates, sticking together where possible, when they are left to their own devices, under the supervision of some incompetent teacher or elderly grandma. When the girls decide to borrow money to pay for the long journey to the city, they face unanticipated threats.

Star Power

The main Stars Huihui Chen, Jingyao Kong, and Li Yingchun were the show stealers of this movie. The acting was brilliant and the emotions expressed, especially in the climax were hard-hitting.

Overall Opinion

The film beautifully depicted how these young girls began to search for their life, despite their dismal choices. When they decide to leave the mountains, their eyes sparkle with hope. Overall, this message-driven picture has demonstrated that there is always hope when you look for it. Now streaming digitally.
