Movie Digest

Lu Qinyang confessed his love for Ling Yiyao in front of the entire school ten years ago. These two high school sweethearts promised to marry each other. A variety of challenges come in their way during the next ten years, putting their partnership to the test. Ling contacted him one day to inform him that she was getting married soon, but the groom was not him.

The Feel-Good Part

The film depicts the relationship and its difficulties realistically with all faces of romance, struggles, happiness, and sadness.

The Disappointing Factor

Some overly generic characters and settings detract from the film’s overall appeal.

In-Depth Analysis

This film is an adaptation of the novel My Girlfriend Who Ran for Ten Years Is Going to Marry Tomorrow by Li Hai Bo. Their story begins in Nanjing high school, where Yiyao is a great achiever and Qinyang is a vibrant but not focused student. As Yiyao continues her studies, Qinyang takes on different difficult jobs to save enough money to marry. Eventually, they move in together, but his work prevents them from spending much time together. Later, he moves away to a remote exotic place to earn money, and the relationship falls apart. These two lovebirds’ hearts are still united even though they are far away. Unlike most films about high school sweethearts, it does not place a strong emphasis on high school romance. The plot takes on a more mature tone and delves into deeper concerns surrounding relationships, such as money, family, and society. The movie ends subtly; it isn’t a cliffhanger that leaves you puzzled.

Star Power

The two protagonists, Qu Chu Xiao as Lu Qinyang and Zhang Jing Yi as Ling Yiyao, did a fantastic job with their characters. The chemistry between them is beautiful.

Overall Opinion

It is a good romance movie. Highly recommend Love Will Tear Us Apart for those who enjoy melodramas.
