Movie Digest

This film centers on Chu Liu Xiang, a gifted martial artist who also struggles with alcoholism. He feels that his life’s mission is to steal from the wealthy, who have always taken advantage of the weak and defenseless, and return their fortune to them, whether on stormy seas or in arid areas. He so aspires to become a good thief. Soon after, he finds himself in an unforeseen adventure and is forced to work with numerous others to battle evil powers. As they continue to fight back, they advance closer to their objective.

The Feel-Good Part

The movie has wonderfully depicted the fight sequences, which are more than enough to keep the viewers glued to the edges of their seats. The cinematography, owing to the old China setting, adds to the beauty of the show. The scenes are beautifully shot and are very artistic on their own, making the viewers wish they could visit them themselves. The actors also give good performances and portray their characters well.

The Disappointing Factor

There are several disappointing factors about the show. Firstly, the show moves forward with everything very quickly. This makes it difficult for the viewers to keep up with what is happening; often, one would have to pause and reach particular parts to understand it. Secondly, this quick-paced movie led to very poor character development, and the characters appeared to be very one-dimensional. Thirdly, this movie appeared to be quite boring at times, which made it difficult to sit through it.

In-Depth Analysis

Chu Lui Xiang (Dylan Kuo) is a hard-drinking newbie in a world where martial artists use magic rule. He is a master martial artist, but he is still young and longs to become a good thief who would steal from the affluent and give their money to the needy on land and at sea. He visits the Divine Water Palace, whose new monarch is Mu Qian Yu, as a result of his daring exploits (Connie Kang). Chu Lui Xiang first misinterprets Mu Qian Yu as an equally hard-drinking Alpha Male who also looks to be a womanizer with exceptional martial arts skills. However, he discovers that the monarch is actually a woman who has assumed a man’s identity in order to ascend to her position when fate compels him to work with Mu Qian Yu. Together, they take on the forces of evil and ultimately fall in love. But once more, fate steps in and keeps them apart for a long time. When they are reunited, Chu Lui Xiang has become a fearsome robber of renown. Does this infatuated couple have what it takes to fight back this time when the forces of evil have something much tougher in store? Gu Long’s writings served as the inspiration for the characters in this drama series. Dong Wei is the director of the 2021 Chinese film “Chief of Thieves: Chu Liu Xiang.”

Star Power

Dylan Kuo, who plays Chu Liu Xiang, is the main cast member of the movie and carries forward the whole thing amazingly. Connie Kang, who plays Mu Qian Yu, and Joyin Cai, who plays Su Rong Rong, along with the other members of the supporting cast, also gave their best.

Overall Opinion

If you have the patience and energy to keep up with a quick-paced movie and do not care much about the time you have, you can give this movie a try.
