Drama Digest

Wanthong, a young girl, was hopelessly in love with Khun Paen and lived with him. He was handsome and she loved him. But after Khun Paen was sent to war, Khun Chang, her admirer, made her believe that Khun Paen had died in the war. He tricked her, and took her in as his wife. But later on, Khun Paen returned as a warrior and with a new wife. He was furious Wanthong had married Khun Chang. Wanthong was heartbroken to find Khun Paen with another wife. But she forgave Khun Paen and wanted to be with him again. She asked Khun Chang for the same, but he locked her up and decided to get rid of Khun Paen. But Khun Paen was aware about his plan and decided to get Wanthong back. He obtained magical items and went to Wanthong.  The series shows Wanthong’s dilemma to choose between a man she loved but who wasn’t satisfied with her, and another man who loved her but treated her like a trophy.

The Feel-Good Part

The casting of Davika, Pong and Shakrit has been done perfectly. They’ve pulled off their roles very well. Watching Shakrit play a different role than his usual ones was fascinating. Pong has also pulled off his role well. Shakrit’s character as Chang was very selfish and hard to stand. It shows how well he performed. Davika also acted really well, leading to many tears from the audience. Pong’s character doesn’t know how to have one woman. He gets infuriating at times, leading to the audience applauding his skills. The plot is a tragedy. The plot about a Wanthong getting involved with two men may seem basic, but the series executes it really well. It had added contemporary touches to the story, making it a wild one. The death of Wanthong is very dramatic and overwhelming. But it is more relieving when the truth is told in the end.

The Disappointing Factor

The disappointing factor was that the series did not clear the ending with Wanthong’s death. The gender roles were imbalanced and her character was criticised for making choices.

In-Depth Analysis

Wanthong is known as a woman who has two hearts. She is unable to pick any of them. She loves Khun Paen and wants him, but he doesn’t want to devote himself entirely to her and she doesn’t want that. She wants him to love her and only her. Khun Chang loves her but treats her as a trophy. She is unable to love him the way she loves Khun Paen. Khun Chang is not a good person but he is willing to love only her and can go to any bounds to have her, even if it means keeping her a prisoner. In the end, Wanthong decides not to choose any one of them, even if it means she would be killed by the king. The viewers feel bad for Wonthong until she goes back to her first husband Khun Paen, despite being married to Khun Chang. She proves that what the people say about her is true. She is a person with two hearts. She imposed the rules of wanting her lover to have her and only her. Khun Chang follows the rules, but he is a terrible person. He is creepy and crazy. He steals her freedom and goes to the extremes a lot of times. But he is willing to love her and only her. But Wanthong is unable to love him. She ends up sleeping with Khun Paen, eloping with Khun Paen and getting pregnant, all while being married to Khun Chang. She could not accept the wife of Khun Paen and wanted him to be faithful but she wasn’t loyal to Khun Chang. She doesn’t have a choice and is unwilling in her situation. Khun Paen doesn’t have any money, so Khun Chang is successfully manipulates her and her mother. Khun Chang keeps manipulating others and using his money to pull strings. He isn’t a good person and that keeps Wanthong from loving him. Many viewers may find it disturbing that she desires Khun Paen to love her and only her, but when Khun Chang loves her, she is unable to love him back. When she had confronted Khun Chang, he had threatened her using her family. It scared her and again, she was held back by him. Many people may find Wanthong’s desire to be with her first husband hypocritical. But at the same time, the viewers won’t be able to defend Khun Chang’s actions. Hence, it gives rise to the question- What would you have done if you were in Wanthong’s shoes.

Star Power

Gender imbalance is a central topic around which a lot of thai dramas and novels revolve. Male characters are allowed to be free in romance but women are forced to have only one love and one heart for that person. But this series manages to tip off that balance and show the truth about how women can love too. They are free to love and make their own choices in love. Wanthong says that she never had a chance to make a choice. But at the end, she is able to make a choice and decide that she would rather not be with any of them. Another twist that the series presents is keeping Wanthong alive. She survives because of Khun Paen and lives her life in isolation. It was a delightful twist to add to the original story. It leaves the viewers satisfied and gives them proper closure.

Overall Opinion

It is a good series with a lot of drama and relatable issues. It is worth watching it.
