Drama Digest

Welcome to Wedding Hell is a tale about people in their 30s preparing for marriage and the life that lies ahead of them in South Korea. The couple faces many hardships relating to their respective families, finding a home and preparing for the D-Day. This tumultuous time in their life was far from what they were expecting when they thought of marriage because of the commonly misrepresented idea of marriage equating a fairytale.

The Feel-Good Part

The story is extremely relatable and unlike a lot of the Korean Dramas that show an idealistic representation of romance and marriage. This drama shows what happens in reality. The entire show feels grounded in reality and relatable while still managing to entertain viewers throughout the run time. The show is quite funny and works as a good balance to the serious themes of adulthood that have been expressed, making the show quite intriguing. The pacing of the show is quite consistent.

The Disappointing Factor

The drama is quite boring and bland as there is more conflict than resolution, which gets exhausting to watch after some time. There are not many things in terms of the entertainment to keep the audience hooked on throughout all the episodes as the show gets increasingly melodramatic with each passing episode. The balance the comedy brings at the beginning of the show also disappears after a couple episodes, which is disappointing. The music of the show is underutilised and not strong enough to convey the emotions in the way the drama wants to. The series may come off as repetitive as the cause of multiple conflicts remains the same, which gets frustrating to watch as it feels like the story is not moving forward in an interesting direction and is instead relying on lazy writing. The characters are not as well written as they could have been as the female protagonist is like a damsel in distress, which is an overused trope in Korean Dramas.

In-Depth Analysis

Korean shows are known for their ability to provide escapism from real world problems, which makes the show quite different. It is refreshing to see a show that deals with the real time consequences of marital conflicts. It is a candid take on how marriage is affected by external factors, which is rarely explored in media. That aspect of the show is well executed. There could have been lesser conflicts and more of a balance with the romantic and comedic aspects as the show got too melodramatic, which makes it harder for viewers to root for the main couple to the very end.

Star Power

All the performances were great as the characters felt relatable to a certain extent.

Overall Opinion

Welcome to Wedding Hell is a forgettable show that doesn’t have much to offer apart from its realistic take on marriage, which is disappointing to say in the least. It has its moments of being a well-executed and entertaining drama at certain points but fails to maintain that tone, which is why this show is an easy skip.
