Zombie Detective is a Korean fantasy crime drama that takes us into the world of crime with a twist. The show is primarily about a confused and new zombie Kim Moo Young who has no memories. In the quest to find his own identity he blends with the human police force and takes on the role of a detective.
The show starts with Kim finding himself lying in a landfill with his body covered in wounds. When he tries to speak, he cannot find his voice or form words. It takes time for him to realize that he has turned into a zombie. However, unlike other zombies that are blood thirsty and aggressive, Kim is a soft and kind-hearted one. He is also afraid of humans.
This is when he starts his only method of survival- blending with humans. He practices walking and talking like humans and adopts the identity of a private detective. His strong sense of smell and fighting skills also help him to earn some money for survival.
Kim still aches for his past and struggles to get his memory back when he meets the current affairs writer Gong Seon Ji. They work together to trace his history and figure out how Kim was linked to one of Seon Ji’s previous cases.
In the 12 episodes we witness Kim trying to adapt to his life among other humans. A zombie with a heart of gold, Kim stands up against injustice. The side characters including Kim’s colleagues who are incompetent in their work also have a loving and warm side when it comes to their loved ones. Seon ji’ sassy friends, bickering family and the three clever kids brought humour and love into the show.
This Korean drama hooks you to it and provides a strange thrill while it takes on its course. It lives up to our expectation and provides no disappointment until the end. The show brings to us something which we have never witnessed before, the world from the point of view of a zombie. This in itself is a unique sensation and makes the show very entertaining. Thus, zombie detective with its emotions and humor is a show that should definitely be watched.
