Drama Digest

A sweet-bitter love story depicting the realities of love and hate between female college students who earn money as stand-in girlfriends, and men attracted to them. This is the story of five women. Yuki, a “rental girlfriend” who makes money by becoming someone’s girlfriend once a week; Rina, a lonely woman who tries to deal with her emptiness with men; Aya, who is in her 30s, is very much obsessed with her appearance and constantly gets plastic surgery done; Moe, who does not get influenced by others and is not afraid to be “herself” in front of anyone; and Yua, who moved to Tokyo in search of freedom and is now living her dream in the nightlife district. The first volume of the electronic version was released in July, and the paper version was published this time. Volume 1 depicts the distorted love pattern of the main character, Yuki, who has lived by pretending to be herself, and the young office worker, Sota, who rented Yuki as a fake girlfriend.

The Feel-Good Part

There are only 4.5 chapters for now. The story is pretty solid and it follows the main character Yuki as she progresses through the story as a rental girlfriend of Sota. Honestly, instead of any annoying loser main character stuff, we get an exciting plot, and overall, it makes more sense and the art is also very good. The main thing is that it reflects the internal struggles of the main character, actual people with actual problems, as she navigates her way on how love is portrayed in the real world. A good read, only half an hour, showcasing heavier themes and very much thought provoking.

The Disappointing Factor

Yuki, who plays her ideal girlfriend according to the wishes of her partner, has gained a lot of popularity from her customers and her work is empty. It explores what really  happens when you rent a girlfriend, none of that harem romance wishes fulfillment that a rented girlfriend is known for.

In-Depth Analysis

The first volume is about a young office worker who rents the protagonist Snow as a fake girlfriend and draws a distorted love pattern between Sota and Snow. Yuki is the substitute girl who plays the customer and the woman of their ideals to the end. The story starts by depicting the daily life of five women in Tokyo. Yuki sells her girlfriend’s services every week. Rina is trying to forget her loneliness and sadness in men’s arms. Aya is obsessed with her appearance and gets multiple cosmetic surgeries. Moe persuades herself to be different to allow her self-affirmation. Yua came to Tokyo to seek freedom and spent her time in Kabukicho’s host club. They all face challenges daily to lead an everyday life as college students. Still they manage their way out and pave the way for themselves.

Star Power

Five gorgeous ladies are cast to play the main characters. The main character of Yuki is played by Yoshikawa Ai. The character of Yua is played by Saito Nagisa. Rina’s role is played by Mayuu Yokota. Yanai Yumena plays the role of Moe. Ugaki Misato is seen portraying the character of Aya. Apart from the ladies, the handsome male characters are Raikou as Sota and Inoue Sora as Yudai.

Overall Opinion

The live-action version of the infamous comic follows five women with various thoughts and ideologies, becoming the main characters in each chapter as the story progresses. Each of them is complex and has their worries & concerns with what is ahead of them, trying to overcome them is fascinating. The realistic psychological depictions of the characters have attracted a lot of attention to this series, and even if they do not have the same experience, people who sympathize with the worldview of “Tomorrow Kano” continue to appear. Once someone gets hooked, they cannot escape the drama.
