Drama Digest

Asagaya Shimai No Nohohan Futarigurashi is a Japanese home drama based on the life of two women who aren’t sisters in real life but live like so. The drama is the story of Eriko Watanabe, also known as Jericho, and Miho Kimura who live and work together as part-time comedians in the city of Asagaya, and are popularly addressed as the ‘Asagaya Sisters’.

The Feel-Good Part

Though it sounds like the drama has a very simple concept, the complexity of the lives of the two women is portrayed quite beautifully in the series. Along with the characters, the viewers also realise the daily ups and downs and various doubts arising in the lives of the characters. The banter between the other residents of the town and the support and encouragement that they provide to the main characters is very enjoyable to watch.

The Disappointing Factor

The concept of the drama has a very wide scope, but the plot lacks a clear direction. The concept could have been more explored, and the show could have been more engaging in some parts.

In-Depth Analysis

Two women, Jericho and Miho, live together in a small house and work part-time as comedians. They wear pink-coloured uniforms and go by the name ‘Asagaya Sisters’. The drama is a collection of various issues and happenings of their life. It shows their day-to-day activities like their comedy shows, how they get ideas for it, the discomfort and fun of two women living together, their unique neighbours and their relationship with their neighbours, and so on. It also shows the hardships and the emotional struggle that the Asagaya sisters face in their life and how they overcome it.

Star Power

The role of Jericho is played by the actress, Tae Kimura, the fragile Asagaya sister, who is also in the charge of cooking. Miho is played by Tamae Ando, the stronger Asagaya sister, and the one in charge of cleaning. The other supporting characters of the neighbours are played by Yoko Ishino, Daisuke Nakagawa, Kaoru Kusumi, Tatsuya Yamawaki, Ryudo Uzaki and Naoko Ken.

Overall Opinion

This is a warm, domestic drama which sheds light on the living ways and conditions of very normal people. It shows how we should always strive and work hard to achieve our goals and success, and no matter what the conditions are, one should never give up on their dreams. The drama relays the message that it’s not the situation or your background that fulfils your dreams. Instead, it’s your hard work and consistent efforts which bring you the results and happiness.
