Yan Zhi Xia must find a way to make money despite being a minister’s daughter. She is only allowed to work at the royal palace if she is disguised as a man. She soon becomes Emperor Yan Jin’s personal Eunuch and is eventually promoted to Head Eunuch, while he keeps her all to himself.
The Feel-Good Part
The chemistry between the characters is strong and consistent throughout the show, which makes the romance quite pleasant to watch. The comedy of the show also gives the series a high entertainment factor as it pairs well with the romance. While the show is light-hearted for the most part, it also has its dramatic moments that are fascinating to watch as it makes the show feel fulfilling on the emotional side as it tries to give the viewers a variety of emotions to enjoy on screen. Despite being a low budget production, it seems to deliver on the visual aspects of the show that go well with the plot. The main characters of the show carry the plot. They are well-written, interesting and have a strong character arc by the end of the show, which is satiating to watch. The series doesn’t waste too much time with flashbacks and time jumps like other series in this genre.
The Disappointing Factor
The story is pretty cliché and doesn’t stray away from the common plot-points of this genre, which makes it predictable and may make it boring to watch. The side characters aren’t developed well, they often feel like props in the background, which feels like wasted potential as they are funny in certain moments and could do a lot to further the plot. The other romantic couples did not have as smooth a development as the leads got, which is disappointing as the run period of the show is quite long. Some of the emotional scenes can come off as melodramatic for certain members of the audience. The Original Soundtrack is one of the most disappointing aspects of the show as it is repetitive and nothing special, which makes it annoying when used in consecutive episodes.
In-Depth Analysis
The drama is a complete package of action, romance with sprinkles of humour that make it the perfect show to binge over a couple of weeks. The ambition of the show is commendable as the action sequences are quite well done, especially considering the low budget. The characters carry the show and provide a light, yet entertaining experience.
Star Power
All the performances were excellent. Zhu Jian and Ma Meng Wei play their respective characters with nuance, which made the audience, connect with the characters well. The side characters must be appreciated for their ability to hold the series together, despite not being given much importance. The leads provide the audience with a memorable performance that is arguably the highlight of the show.
Overall Opinion
Oops! The King is in Love is not a ground-breaking show by any means but it fulfils its aim to be an entertaining show for the most part, which is why it may be worth a shot for people who enjoy romance.
