The God of Cinema is a Japanese movie released in 2021. The movie is alternatively known as It’s A Flickering Life. The movie tells the story of love and friendship and revolves around a passionate gambler, Goh. Tired of his gambling habit, his family has given up on him. However, if there’s anything Goh is passionate about other than gambling, it is cinema. Goh has worshipped the god of cinema since his younger days. His love of cinema changes the lives of his family.

The Feel-Good Part

The movie will evoke a feeling of nostalgia in you and take you back to the old generation of movies. The movie is directed by celebrated Japanese director Yoji Yamada, who has a reputation for making some of the best movies, and with God of Cinema too, the director didn’t disappoint his fans.

The Disappointing Factor

The movie surely has its bits of faulty factors such as slight repetition of the storyline, however, there is no major disappointing factor present in the movie.

In-Depth Analysis

The movie is based on the novel called Kinema no Kamisama written by popular author, Maha Harada. God of Cinema is the 92nd movie of the Japanese veteran film director, Yoji Yamada. The film tells the story of a man who loves cinema and has worshipped cinema since his younger days along with his friends. The movie shows a glimpse of Japan’s golden age of Cinema in the 70s and ’80s, which will truly make you feel as if you have time-traveled to that era. The film tells the story of Goh, in his older days and younger days. The film is set in two different eras and is shown simultaneously on-screen. The cinematography of the movie is truly praiseworthy and will take you back to the early era. The film very well depicts the friendship between Goh and Terashin and how they fall in love with the same girl. The movie, at times, does feel a little unrealistic but doesn’t really disrupt the overall quality of the movie.

Star Power

The movie stars some of the most talented and loved actors in the Japanese entertainment industry. Veteran actor Sawada Kenji plays the character of Goh, while Suda Masaki plays the younger version of the character, Goh. Miyamoto Nobuko plays the role of Yoshiko, while Nagano Mei plays the younger version of the character. Kobayashi Nenji plays the role of Terashin, while Noda Yojiro plays the younger version of the character. The movie also stars actors such as Terajima Shinobu as Ayumu, Kitagawa Keiko as Katsura Sonoko, Lily Franky as Izumi Hiroshi, Shison Jun as Mizukawa, Maeda Oshiro as Yuta, Matsuo Takashi, Hirooka Yuriko, Kitayama Masayasu, Harada Taizo, Katagiri Hairi, Sakoda Takaya, Kondo Koen, Shibuya Tensho, Soganoya Kantaro, Shibukawa Kiyohiko, and Toyohara Erika. Iwashiro Taro composed the music for the movie.

Overall Opinion

God of Cinema is an entertaining movie supported by top-notch acting by some of the most talented actors. The screenplay, dialogues, and cinematography of the movie are well balanced with each other and overall make for an entertaining watch. The parallel scenes of the characters in different eras and their equation are truly cinematic masterpieces and will make you romanticize cinema just like the character of Goh. Overall, God of Cinema is surely a must-watch film!
