Movie Digest
During the Northern Song Dynasty, an old monk adopts an abandoned baby with a scar. The story is about the revelation of its identity and the back story behind the baby’s abandonment.
The Feel Good Part
The costumes and visuals are spell-binding. In addition, the aspect of the wily fox being good is interesting, and the movie also shows the ancient Chinese element of fairy tales.
The Disappointing Factor
The script is a huge letdown as it is very confusing with many twists, but no clear explanation or rationale behind the twist.
In-Depth Analysis
The movie is adapted from a short story “The Crow’s Head”, from the novel, “Strange Tales of the Chinese Studio”.
During the primeval Northern Song rule, an old monk Zhishan adopts a baby with a scar and names him Wang Zi. The monk learns that the baby is half human and half fox, yet, he teaches Wang Zi, the scriptures and meditation.
Later on, Wang Zi meets his father (a human) who tells him the story of him and his mother (a fox). Towards the latter half of the movie, Wang Zi has to protect his mother from Fox Mother and demon hunter Qiuyu.
Star Power
The main leads of the movie are Andy Wang and Shi Jing Zi, both upcoming actors. Even though the script is all over, the cast has portrayed their characters well.
Overall Opinion
If you are fan of fantasy action, then it is a one-time watch. But if you have read the short story, then the movie can be avoided.
