Drama Digest

Love You as the World Ends, a Japanese drama aired on NTV Network, is written by Natsuko Ikeda and directed by Shintaro Sugawara. The drama portrays the story of Hibiki Mamiya played by Ryoma Takeuchi as a young man with a blazing persona, who for earnings works as a car mechanic. To continue his high school relationship with his girlfriend Kurumi Ogasawara played by Ayami Nakajo, he plans to propose to her. But fate didn’t seem to comply with it as he gets trapped in a tunnel due to a mishap. 4 days later, when he manages to get out of the tunnel, he finds himself in a different world with the travel signals ruined to dust and streets stained with crimson blood. He then sets off to search for his dear beloved who goes missing in this world which is near its end.

The Feel-Good Part

For people who enjoyed watching the movie Train to Busan, Alive, or Peninsula, this drama is apt for them. The drama sets off to give “Walking Dead” vibes and thus is also regarded as Japan’s Walking Dead which introduces its views with a group of people trying hard to survive in a world that is taken over by zombies called golems in the show. The improvement in the interactions of the characters and the way the story proceeds is remarkable.

The Disappointing Factor

To my dismay, the concept of the drama wasn’t unique for there have already been a lot of dramas that followed the same plot. However, the love story that evolved on the screens is capable of strumming the strings of one’s heart. Also, the series failed to provide a backstory of the characters and thus gives rise to confusion. The amount of violence and casualties seem dreadful and thus this series is only liked by the people who have a high tolerance to violence and blood scenes.

In-Depth Analysis

A point of difference between this drama and the other previously released dramas based on the zombie concept is; this drama unveils that the golems are not natural rather they are the result of a virus created by a doctor in his laboratory to turn humans into zombies. Another shocking thrill that added spice to the drama storyline was the part when it was revealed that Hibiki’s mother who died years ago was the first to be turned into a golem by the doctor.
Towards the end, the wicked doctor was shot dead by Hibiki after he transformed into a golem.

Star Power

The cast of this drama delivered significant performance and managed to attract several viewers. From protagonists to antagonists, the stars were well admired for their roles.

Overall Opinion

With the surging casualties, the drama had a lot of potential with expectations of new characters and antagonists that delivered their performance in season 2 of this drama. The love story that flourished in the drama added a feather to its cap and thus was widely liked.
