Drama Digest

Higashina Keigo Samayou Yaiba (The Hovering Blade) is an intriguing six-part series. It prompts one to consider the impact of social justice or revenge in our environment, how police handle their procedures, juvenile delinquency and its effects, and the impact of the press and its information management. The show discusses how far one should allow pain and love to dictate their thinking.

The Feel-Good Part

The feel-good part about the show is that it displays each protagonist’s silence, filled with uncertainties and questions. In addition, the series does not only talk about revenge but also about the significant problem of juvenile rapes and murders.

The Disappointing Factor

The show was a little slow at points, mainly when it needed to demonstrate exactly how much misery the father was going through, but overall it was well worth watching. The background of other characters is not shown, which does not make the watchers feel connected to them. Moreover, it is not always easy to watch violence in some situations, but the show is well-crafted.

In-Depth Analysis

Shigeki has been raising his daughter Ema alone since his wife died. Ema is now a senior in high school. They have disagreements, like most father-daughter relationships, yet they still count on each other. One night, Ema does not come home from her part-time work and is found dead. Shigeki goes into a severe state of depression. Shigeki receives a call a few days later and the name and address of the man who murdered his daughter. Shigeki walks to the residence the caller told him about after some hesitation. He finds a video of his daughter’s horrible murder there. He then turns to face Atsuya, who has just returned to his flat. Shigeki murders Atsuya, which leads the media to cover the news in frenzy. Shigeki’s activities have divided public opinion. Following the murder of Atsuya, Shigeki is on the hunt for Kaiji, the primary offender.

Star Power

All the stars played their part beautifully. The show is not about the plot but emphasises what the character is going through. The characters mostly make implausible but rational choices.

Overall Opinion

It is such fantastic work with so many excellent qualities that it is worth your time to see.
