He is a South Korean Film director and screenwriter who is known for directing elegant romantic comedies. Some of his incredible works include ‘YMCA Baseball Team’ (2002), ‘Joint Security Area’ (2000), and ‘Seu-ka-woo-teu’ (2007).
He was born on June 7, 1972, in South Korea. He was raised in the former country specifically. After concluding his early education, he went to a University to continue his education. He attended Yonsei University, South Korea, and while studying business administration at University, he wrote the screenplay for ‘A Good Day to Fall in Love.’ This screenplay was eventually turned into a film in 1995 which was directed by Kwon Chil-in. Following that, he continued to win Best New Screenwriter at the prestigious Grand Bell Awards. Later, he joined a production company Myung Films, and wrote ‘If the Sun Rises in the West’ (1998),’ which was directed by Lee Eun, featuring Im Chang-jung and Ko So-young as a baseball umpire and an actress who falls in love.
In addition, he has also worked as an assistant director on ‘The Isle’ (2000), along with co-screenwriter on Park Chan-wook’s ‘Joint Security Area’ (2000). Regardless of his success in screenwriting, he pursued directing and majored in filmmaking at the Graduate School of Advanced Imaging Science, Multimedia & Film at Chung-Ang University. Soon this talented artist made his directional debut with, YMCA Baseball in 2002 Team casting Song Kang-ho, Kim Hye-soo, and Kim Joo-hyuk. This film received a massive response from people around the world, as it won the supreme prize at the 17th Fukuoka Asian Film Festival in Japan, and also Kim received the title of Best New Director at the Chunsa Film Art Awards in 2002 and the Baeksang Arts Awards in 2003. Moreover, he continued with his passion and wrote and directed his second film ‘When Romance Meets Destiny’ featuring Kim Joo-hyuk, Bong Tae-gyu, Lee Yo-won, and Kim Ah-joong. The film was a blockbuster hit and it drew a solid 2.4 million admissions at the box office.
His other notable works are ‘Scout’ (2007), ‘Cyrano Agency’ (2010), ‘11 A.M.’ (2012), ‘INGtoogi: The Battle of Internet Trolls’ (2013), ‘C’est Si Bon’ (2015), and ‘I Can Speak’ (2017). He is the recipient of numerous awards including Best Director for ‘I Can Speak’ at the 2017 38th Blue Dragon Film Awards.
