Movie Digest

Lu Ziming, a Southeast Asian security expert, was the sole survivor of an accident, while his partner Leon was presumed dead because of an oncoming missile. Colonel Dee assigns Ziming the responsibility of securing an auction for a Sino-Euro oil-gas plant project two years later. However, Ziming fled because they accused him of shooting a minister at the auction. Meanwhile, journalist Mo Bai who is anxious to obtain the story becomes an ally of Ziming after finding the truth.

The Feel-Good Part

They utilized the outdoor setting of the film well. The movie tried to bring different Hollywood elements.

The Disappointing Factor

There is no strong storyline. The action choreography is uninteresting, sparse, and clumsily cut, giving the impression that Vincent Zhao has no prior training in martial arts. The CGI did not hit the mark.

In-Depth Analysis

Counter Attack seems like another version of Wu Jing’s Wolf Warrior. This film feels greater than its intimate narrative, and it combines golden-age Hollywood action with cliché Chinese action. Although Counterattack is a Chinese film, the dialogue is partially in English because the setting is in a fictional Southeast Asian country where English is their first language. Unfortunately, because the actors are not used to speaking English, this combination of languages appears uncomfortable, which unavoidably hinders the flow of their actions. Certain aspects of the plot are left unanswered, such as why Ziming gets framed and who is hell-bent on killing Ziming and resents him. The film concludes with a corny, ridiculous epilogue that hints at a sequel.

Star Power

This film is the directorial debut of Vincent Zhao (Ziming), with him being the lead. Leon (Diego Dati) and Mo Bai (Jiang Yiyi) did a great job supporting the lead role.

Overall Opinion

There is not anything that makes this movie unique. It is just another average action film.
