WON Shin-Yun, born in 1969, started his career as a stuntman before moving into filmmaking, with notable credits including (1997) and (1998). His debut film as a director was a short film he made with a camera he purchased with money gained from stunt work. In 2005, he made his feature film debut with the horror film. WON’s second movie (2006) received critical acclaim for its unique comedy, suspense, and horror blend.
Against all odds, his third film, 7 Days(2007), was a commercial hit. Thrillers weren’t particularly popular in Korea at the time, but 7 Days(2007), starring KIM Yun-jin from the popular US TV series, and NA Hong-(2008), jin’s opened the floodgates of horror films. WON then sought to create a live-action adaptation of the popular local anime Robot Taekwon V, but he eventually moved on to other projects because of financial difficulties. The spy action thriller (2013), released on Christmas Eve in 2013, was one. The film was a smash, with 4.1 million tickets sold and praised for its excellent action set pieces and similarities to Hollywood’s Bourne spy trilogy. With MEMOIR OF A MURDERER(2016), he adapted KIM Young-bestselling ha’s novel of the same name to the film, which is notable for making extensive use of the diary format to depict the protagonist’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease. The thriller, directed by SUL Kyung-gu, topped the box office in its opening week, attracting 2.6 million people.
