Shin Yeon-shick is a screenwriter and director of South Korea. He directed Rough Play (2013), The Russian Novel (2013), and The Fair Love (2010). He was born in 1976 in Seoul, South Korea. Shin Yeon-shick dropped out of university to pursue a career in filmmaking after majoring in Spanish Studies. In 2003, he debuted with Piano Lesson. Made A film on a shoestring budget of US $300. Shin wrote and directed A Great Actor, a black-and-white indie that had its global premiere at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2005.

His next film, The Fair Love (2010), was a subtle, poetic intergenerational romance starring Ahn Sung-ki and Lee Ha-na. Despite well-known stars and favorable reviews, the picture was a box office flop with mainstream viewers.

Shin continued to make experimental films on a shoestring budget. The Russian Novel, an elaborate arthouse drama starring Kang Shin-Hyo as a despondent novelist who wakes up from a 27-year coma to find himself a literary celebrity for a novel he didn’t create, received even more critical praise. At the 17th Busan International Film Festival in 2012, Shin was nominated for Best Director by the Director’s Guild of Korea and Best Screenplay by the Korean Association of Film Critics and the Buil Film Awards.

In 2013, he directed Rough Play (Korean: “An Actor Is an Actor”), based on a screenplay by Kim Ki-Duk about the dark underbelly of the Korean film industry through the rise and fall of a young actor, and starring K-pop singer Lee Joon. Shin was keen to turn Kim’s symbolism-heavy script into a more narrative-driven, commercial film, and he rewrote and reshot half of the film during post-production.

The Avian Kind followed, in which a man embarks on a road trip in search of his lost wife, only to find her 15 years later, turned into a bird. It had its international premiere as part of the 2014 Jeonju Digital Project at the Jeonju International Film Festival. After that, Shin and Kim Sung-ho collaborated on How to Steal a Dog (2014). Shin Min-Cheol and Kim Dasom star in his next movie, Like a French Film, an omnibus consisting of four short films named A Time to Leave, A Lady Selling Beer, A Remaining Time, and Like a French Film.
