Born in 1967, Shin Su-won is a film director and screenwriter from South Korea. Passerby #3 (2010), Pluto (2013), and Madonna (2014) were all written and directed by Shin (2015). At the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, her short film Circle Line won the Canal+ Prize for Best Short Film.

Shin Su-won studied German language instruction at Seoul National University and then worked for ten years as a middle school teacher in Seoul, primarily teaching social studies subjects like geography, world history, and political economy. She also published two teen-oriented books at this time. She then enrolled in Korea National University of Arts in 2010 to become a novelist. On the other hand, Shin fell in love with movies and filmmaking and switched her degree to screenwriting. She left her teaching career at the age of 34 to pursue a career as a film director.

Shin had been working on her feature directorial debut since 2007 with a budget of $25 million from her pension. Her self-produced independent film Passerby #3, released in 2010, was inspired by her own experiences as a thirty-something woman seeking to get into the film industry. At the 11th Jeonju International Film Festival, Passerby #3 earned the JJ-Star Award, and at the 23rd Tokyo International Film Festival, it won the Best Asian-Middle Eastern Film award.

Her next effort was the short film Circle Line, which depicts a middle-aged guy passing the time on a Seoul subway train while attempting to conceal his recently laid off from his family. Circle Line was selected for the 65th Cannes Film Festival and awarded the Canal+ Prize for Best Short Film. It gets released in theatres as part of the Modern Family four-film omnibus.

Pluto, Shin’s second film, was a thriller released in 2012 that looked at the competitive aspect of the Korean educational system. Shin won a special mention at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival’s Generation 14+ Section for his work, which premiered at the 17th Busan International Film Festival.

Madonna’s third feature film about a nurse’s aide attempting to get an organ donation premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the 68th Cannes Film Festival in 2015.
