Shin Seong-il was a well-known South Korean actor, film director, producer, and former politician who lived from May 8, 1937. Shin Sang-ok, a famed actor who has appeared in over 500 films throughout his career, made his debut in director Shin Sang-1960 ok’s film A Romantic Papa and climbed to popularity through popular youth flicks.  Between the 1960s and 1970s, He was a well-known celebrity, but his reputation as one of Korea’s best actors lasted far into the 1980s. Shin is still regarded affectionately by filmmakers today, having appeared in several of the most famous Korean films of all time. He had directed It Is You, A love story, Lover’s classroom, and Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. Shin had won Favourite actor at Blue Dragon Film Awards in 1963, 1964, 1965, and 1966. He had also won Favourite actor at Baeksang Arts Awards in 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, and 1978.

Park Chan-wook, the filmmaker, stated, “We have Shin Seong-il in place of Toshiro Mifune in Japan, Marcello Mastroianni in Italy, Gregory Peck in America, and Alain Delon in France. Never has a country’s film industry and art been so reliant on a single individual in all of history. It is difficult to know Korean film history or modern cultural history without first understanding Shin Seong-il.” Shin married actress Um Aeng-ran in 1964, still remembered as a national event. In their prime, the two were practically the local equivalents of “Brangelina.” Shin and Um never divorced, but they did live apart for most of their marriage.

Shin Seong-il, a legendary South Korean actor, died on November 4, 2018, at the age of 81, following a year-and-a-half battle with lung cancer. Shin has appeared in over 500 films, the most recent being 2013’s Door to the Night and dubbed “a living witness of Korean film history.”
