Shim Sung-bo (born 1972) is a film director and screenwriter from South Korea. After co-writing the 2003 film Memories of Murder, Shim rose to prominence with director Bong Joon-ho. Memories of Murder hailed for the twisting genre tropes that made it a massive hit in Korea (with over 5.1 million admissions, making it the most-watched film in South Korea in 2003) as well as a successful piece of social cinema that grappled with Korea’s complicated history. Bong and Sung-bo reunited as producer and director for Shim’s directorial feature debut, Haemoo (2014), winning several awards, including Best New Director at the 15th Busan Film Critics Awards. In 2014, he got awarded Golden Orchid for Best Narrative Feature at the Hawaii International Film Festival and Best Film Award (Orient Express) at the Fantasporto in 2015. He had also worked for a short film Visiting report in Korea as director in 2004. He had directed What the…? In 2011.
