Lee Su Jin is counted among one of the most exceptional South Korean directors of the Film Industry. He has worked as both a film director and a screenwriter. Lee has given the most remarkable works to the industry, which is admired by people worldwide. He is mainly known for movies like “Happiness” (2007), “Han Gong-ju” (2014), and “Idol” (2019).
He was born in Gimcheon in zfebruary 9 1977. After finishing his educational qualifications, he entered the film industry to follow the path of his passion. He commenced his journey in filmmaking by directing short films like, “One of the famous was Papa” (2004), which attained great response from the viewers and also won the Korean Film Archive Award at the 30th Seoul Independent Film Festival. Another notable work was “Enemy’s Apple” (2007) which received Best Film in the A City of Sadness section of the 7th Mise-en-scene Short Film Festival. All these workpieces provided him with fame and respect from his fans. Furthermore, Lee released his first directional feature film i.e. “Han Gong-ju”, which was also written and produced by him. The film gained huge credit when it was premiered at the 18th Busan International Film Festival in 2013, where it was honored with the CGV Movie Collage Award and the Citizen Reviewer’s Award.
Later on, Lee made his mind to make a film that talks about how a girl struggles not to let go of her hope” in a manner “to give courage to all the Han Gong-jus in the world who find themselves in the same situation.” He featured an excellent star named Chun Woo-hee in the title role because he was awe-struck by her empathy and penetration. It received wide recognition and won numerous awards such as won Golden Star (Étoile d’Or) at the 13th Marrakech International Film Festival, the Tiger Award at the 43rd International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Grand Prize (Regard d’or) at the 28th Fribourg International Film Festival, along with Jury Prize, Critics’ Prize and Audience Award at the 16th Deauville Asian Film Festival.
In 2014, another big moment came for the movie when it was premiered on 226 screens in South Korea and drew 225,580 admissions, which made it one of the utmost commercially prosperous Korean low-budget independent films. It earned several domestic awards as well, for, say Best Film at the 6th KOFRA Film Awards and Grand Prize at the 2nd Wildflower Film Awards. Lee was also honored for his hard work in the industry by giving him the Best Independent Film Director at the 14th Director’s Cut Awards, Best Screenplay at the 34th Korean Association of Film Critics’ Awards, and Best New Director at the 35th Blue Dragon Film Awards.
